I figure I've dwelled on LJ about Alison's passing enough at this point, and things are starting to get a little easier day to day as well. So, I'll go back to my one last bastion of comfort, metal.
People who read this journal or who talk to me much in real life probably know I'm pretty enthusiastic about metal. So when I'm in Waterloo with Dave, Madison and Tyler, browsing through the metal section, it never ends up meaning much when I exlaim, "Oh yeah, _________, they're awesome, I love them." The easy, dismissive response is "you say that about every band". To combat this, I found myself saying a couple of times, "No, these guys are like, Top 5" in the hopes of adding a little bit of credibility to my statement.
With credibility in mind, I realize that I should be careful about just how many bands I classify as being "Top 5". Specifically, I figure it's a problem if there's more than five of them ;) So, looking into the memory banks:
In HMV, I absolutely know that I've given top 5 status to High On Fire, Pig Destroyer, and Nasum, three well deserving bands. I have a faint memory of placing Rotten Sound on the list as well, however, this may be problematic as that means my list is already 3/5 grindcore. May have to take that one back, if I did indeed say it.
At some point or another in conversation I've thrown top 5 distinction at Borknagar, another well-deserving choice, and Gorguts, whose album "Obscura" recently took the "favourite album" spot on that huge meme. That gives me five out of five without even realizing it, and without having to compromise on what I've said in the past (unless I did at one point say Rotten Sound... oopsies!).
Honestly, when I sat down to write this I actually thought there was a spot open, forgetting until just now that I've mentioned Top 5 when Gorguts came up (although obviously, I was the one to bring them up in the first place... who else would?). I was going to toss around some potential fifth place names, like Novembers Doom, or Dark Tranquillity, or Between The Buried And Me, or Sleep, or- and the list goes on and on. However, for now at least, I'm perfectly happy with the top five I've stumbled into choosing, and think it may actually be entirely accurate - until the next amazing band comes along to shake things up.
