You say "Look at how the world works", but I say "Look at how the words work", and to me, that's more than the world's worth
I threw that into my MSN name one day, and it hasn't been changed since. It's got to be my longest standing MSN name in quite some time. Like most of my MSN names, I just wrote it as I stared into the empty box to put in a name. Forces creativity, those empty boxes. It's very true, too. I've always been fascinated with what you can do with language, how it can be manipulated and structured to evoke certain moods and emotions, and also how it can be used to not only tell a story but also give that story a musical quality. With the right words you can infuse a tale with rhythm and either attack with it, bludgeoning a listener, or weave it into a hypnotic, lulling spell. Simply fascinates me.
That's certainly a major influence in what I try to do with the verses that I write. I think that Train Wreck was something of a low point for my attempts in that style, and I really don't believe I accomplished what I had set out to evoke. Still, it has been written, and I'm not going to delete it or anything. It's just a reminder of what happens when I force myself to push onward without really trying to find that perfect string of words.
Trying to write fiction is an interesting experience for me. If you were to stress over each word as I have in the past for poetry, you woudn't get anywhere at all. In that way, it's kind of nice, because you can do some things instinctively and then experiment with the other things. It's going to be interesting seeing the reactions to my writing once some prose is posted... and honestly, I haven't had any prose critiqued since before high school I think, so I'm going to need some help I think, hahaha. Oh well.
From reading certain poems I've written, I'm sure you can tell that there is a certain rap/hip hop influence. That's definitely true. For someone calling themselves a metalhead, admitting to liking rap is darn near a fatal sin, but there was a time before discovering the international underground metal scene that I primarily listened to rap music. Although I can't say that I don't appreciate a thumping beat, I was always most concerned with the lyricism. No matter what the subject matter, be it gangsta, party or serious. I love the gangsta storytelling abilities of Notorious B.I.G. and 2Pac. I can't get enough of the political lashings of Talib Kweli or Immortal Technique. I'll listen with a grin to punchline masters like Ludacris or Big L. I'll groove to the bravado-heavy southern drawl of Slim Thug or Chamillionaire. There's simply a ton of hip hop out there that I enjoy... just as there is in just about any genre of music.
I have no shame in the things that I like. I decided a long time ago that I would be completely open in my LiveJournal, and I have strived to maintain this even when I'd rather just hide behind an image. In fact, I'm probably most open about myself on LiveJournal. Very interesting, when you consider that certainly no one who sees me on a day to day basis actually reads it. I wonder what people would learn...
