[The quote I wanted to put in here was too long]

Oct 29, 2005 03:52

What I would have put in the title was this brilliant, spontaneous, and just plain sad output from the mouth of my friend Tyler as we left the Chill N Grill and some giggling young women were exiting a car:

"I hear giggling-where there's giggling there's drunk girls - where there's drunk girls, there's sex. OH SHIT! That's my Chem TA!"

... at which point he turns and runs, hiding his face in his jacket, since he was being pretty drunk-sounding (and therefore loud) himself. We'll see how his marks come back... maybe a friendly little "meet me in my office tonight" note hidden in the pages of his last lab report... Who knows. (TA = Teacher's Assistant for the uninitiated, and among other things they mark assignments).

Today was a pretty good day. Fridays are my easiest day in terms of classes, with Algebra for an hour at 9:30 and Calculus for an hour at 12:30 (I know, I know, "How can Algebra and Calculus be a part of an easy day?" Well, this is what I'm studying, get over it :P ).

Now, at this point I went to sleep until 7:30. No, that was not a nap. That was my night's sleep. I think it's time to unleash upon you my "Innovative Solution" to my problems getting up for class in the morning. If you're wondering, that link is to Tyler's blog. He's one of UWaterloo's official student bloggers (there is one from each faculty; he is the one from Math), and it's all about me and my sleep problems, from his perspective. The long and the short of it is this:

1. I stay up all night, every night.
2. I go to my morning class(es).
3. I sleep 6-8 hours (my "night's sleep").
4. I go to my night classes.
5. Repeat.

This basically ended up happening naturally, since I was going to bed later and later. However, this has ended up working marvelously for me. I go to all my classes, get all the sleep I need, and get to stay up all night, which is apparently some sort of psychological necessity for me. During the night, I do all my work, listen to music... basically, try and make the most of that big, long, uninterrupted chunk of time. I'm not sure why, but this just feels like it suits me very well. I see my friends in class and hang out with them in the afternoon/evening, just like I did with my old sleeping patterns.

It's been like this for close to a week and a half. I mean, come on, you think those 5:30-6:00AM entries came after I woke up? Well, for anyone who knows me, they know there's little chance of that.

How long is this going to last? Well, it may be ending as soon as... this weekend. My parents are driving up from Toronto for the weekend to visit me, and will be staying in Kitchener (they wanted St. Jacob's, but all of the hotels were full). Now, this means doing stuff with them during the day - which is typically when I'd be sleeping. Something has got to give, haha. Right now it's 3:45. After writing this, I am going to do my best to get to sleep. I need to be up for 11:30-12:00 so that I'm awake when my parents phone before they leave. Then, tomorrow night, I have to go to bed early, since I'm supposed to be up early for more parent-visiting on Sunday.

If I get back on track this weekend, I'm going to try to keep it that way. As much as I love this whole nocturnal thing (and I do love it... does this say something about me? lol) I can't help but think that it would be generally better if I was awake through the daylight hours. Really, there are just more opportunities to do things with people that way. Plus, all the places to eat are closed, and if I keep making 4am runs to the vending machines (which have only chocolate bars.... healthy)... it will be bad. The one interesting thing about this new plan is that I am eating breakfast for the first time since coming here - like this morning. Three Tim Horton's bagels. Mmmm, now that's a tasty way to start the day.

Well, I'm going to try to fall asleep now I think. I doubt I'll be too successful, but hey, a boy can dream, can't he?

university, sleep, day to day
