Apparently I am still good for a solid 9 hours of driving, most of which was well after the sun had left us and some of it through some icky weather.
American Eagle was unable to fly into Dallas from Baton Rouge due to said weather. Because it was weather, they weren't going to give us anything as far as hotel/vouchers/etc - best they could do was a flight in for the next day at 11:36 AM. This was after Artimis' flight was bumped from a 11AM flight to a 6PM flight to being canceled - I didn't have much faith in their ability to execute. I also sat in line for about 3 hours to be told this, the only benefit of which was to get my baggage back. So I've got an wife/infant with me, no hotel reservations, no rental car reservations, and close to 20 hours before our re-scheduled flight.
I decided that since I'd have to get a rental anyway to get to a hotel (cabs don't typically have infant seats AFAIK), we might as well just take said rental and drive home. We called American Eagle, and they were happy enough to refund 1/2 the flight cost. I'm sure they're struggling coping with the load shifting, and are just as happy not to have to deal with us.
For the curious, a 1 way full-size rental with carseat and unlimited miles and no reservation was about $120/day - which I'm pretty happy with. They even had someone there at 2:30AM at the airport to take the car. Cost wise, we certainly came out ahead.
The drive was good - haven't done anything so insane for awhile. Got back to our place a little after 3AM. After changing the battery in a smoke detector, I got 4 good hours of sleep before waking for the day. Just a few years ago this wouldn't have been a big deal...but boy am I feeling it today.
