Frequently asked questions from my customers/clients/patients.
****Do your hands ever get tired from all the massaging?
A: There are several types of answers to this. **common sense answer.... yes they do get tired. I am only human and I am putting a lot of pressure on your muscles. After a long day, they can get tired if I don't take breaks and I don't stretch and take care of myself.
**something you might not know answer: actually after a while, you don't get tired hands. You get tired feet. With all the body mechanics and techniques you learn to actually save your hands/fingers/thumbs in massage, your are putting more leverage into each massage stroke/technique. This makes you use your hips and legs more to put more thrust into the muscles. Also, there are many hours where I hardly move. In massage therapy, you are limited to where you can walk around near the table or the chair. So after a long day of work, your feet and legs might get tired.
**smart ass reply that sometimes every massage therapist wants to say but will hold off on: "actually my hands are tired now that you mentioned it"; so you are going to get a crappy massage" (power of suggestion)
****What kind of schooling did you go through in massage?
A: each state has different requirements for massage therapists. That includes certain hours of lecture and clinical as well as a state or nationally certified test.
****What is usually the pay like as a massage therapist?
A: that depends on the types of jobs you are doing. There are the commission/split type where you work and build up your own clients and each service you provide you get a percentage split. There are hourly wages, and there are full under the table wages if you do house/hotel calls independently. There are also some offices that will pay you a certain amount per day. You will only get more if you go over a certain number of clients that day. Most places that accept gratuity will give it to you towards the end of the day or for each client who will hand it to you.
I make around 35k a year after taxes.
****Do people creep you out? If so how?
A: I have been propositioned when I first started. A gay male asked me out. It didn't really faze me but I suppose for others who are not secure with themselves, it would be creepy. Most of the time, you tell them no or you end the massage if you feel your life is in some sort of danger and you get out. I have had one incident where I have left the house and called the cops to come back to get the table. And I also charged the client full price.
Other times, people who are just inconsiderate. Not showering before they get a massage, heavy smokers/drinkers who when you massage them, the smell comes out of their pores, nasty smelling feet.
****How do you do massage with all those nasty bodies?
A: I do massage for healing and to make money. I don't do it to feel up a man or woman. I don't do it to try and pick up dates. It's strictly therapeutic, alternative health, and it's strictly my job/career.
