Again I find myself long overdue for a real update.
First of all I'm happy to report that I only had to work 3 weeks of my "new" schedule with sucky days off. I'm back to my version of normal.
Speaking of work: I had my 5-day break over Labor Day weekend. Didn't do much of anything but it was really good to be away from work. The place gives me a serious case of cabin fever sometimes.
Aly came up for a couple of days and it's always good to see her. She was having a rough time about a month ago and I guess things had continued to pile up and stress her out.
I literally spent 1 whole day painting a box that I got a couple months ago when Laila and I went out garage sale-ing. Pictures are on facebook, but only half of it is done. I picked a way too detailed design and lost interest for now. :P
The day before my birthday I made
Cake Balls. That recipe is an easy, messy, delicious, keeper! Those are definitely being added to the Christmas Goodies plates this year. And on the same subject: my grandma got me a subscription to Taste of Home magazine for my birthday. I got the first issue a few days ago and I've already bookmarked a couple different recipes to try. Hopefully I can get that accomplished before the new issue gets to me next month. lol
My birthday was overall a pretty mellow day. I woke up early for no apparent reason but turned on my phone knowing I'd be getting at least 1 early-ish phonecall from my out-of-town grandma who calls and sings to me every year. It was birthday love for the next 12 hours. Phonecalls, texts and facebook notifications every 10-15 minutes.
I made my family eat at The Anchor for birthday dinner. And from my family I got some of the most awesome gifts ever. The ipod touch is the thing that was a total surprise but I love it! I also got an 8GB Eye-Fi card for my camera. I desperately needed a new card but this little sucker is the coolest thing. It's wifi enabled and basically once you set up the wifi access and install the software all you have to do is take pictures. The card automatically send the pictures to the computer. No cables, no work at all. I LOVE it.
My sister got me something at an antique store in Missouri during a trip they took to see Conrad. It's a tiny cast iron corn stick pan. It's literally the size of my hand and it'll make 7 corn sticks about the size of your finger. I love corn bread, and I love old the corn stick pan that my grandma gave me a few years ago. This was kind of a gag gift, but I'll use it at least once. It's in decent shape for coming from an antique store. Definitely needs to be seasoned again.
And this is a great time to tell this random story: For the past few years, every time that Dustin and I go to a new (and usually small) towns, we find ourselves spending at least a little bit of time roaming antique stores. The one thing that I ALWAYS do in an antique store is look at every children's books available. I get especially excited when I see a rack of Golden Books.
When I was about 4 years old, we used to go camping with a bunch of relatives pretty much every weekend. My grandparents camper only offered a few things in the way of entertainment. There was a book that I always made my great uncle Robert read to me. It was book called "Cindy Bear." Yogi's girlfriend? Wife? Anyway. Uncle Robert messed up all the words on purpose. I'm told, that at 4 years old, I felt so sorry for Robert because he can't read. And apparently I told that to everyone, except Uncle Robert. lol
My mom had one last gift that absolutely shocked me. She handed me a flat, padded envelope that had a return address on it from several states away and had been mailed back in May. I pulled out a book, and gasped. It was the Cindy Bear book. She found it on eBay and ordered it for me. Flipping through the pages, memories of the whole story came back to me. It's a random piece of my childhood. Not sure what I'll do with it yet, but it's very cool to have in my possession. Here's a picture of me and Uncle Robert reading this book:
Okay so...birthday = success. On Saturday the 11th Dustin and I went up to Bentley to hang out at Briana's. It was her husband's 30th birthday. The only downside of going out there is that it gets late and then it's even later when you get home because it's so far away. Briana let me borrow a jacket at like 2AM (we all got cold and sleepy) and I pretty much checked out. Half asleep in a lawnchair til it was time to go. Yeah, I sure know how to party!
On Sunday the 12th, Dustin invited me to go to an OKC Thunder Rally out east. It was a ridiculously good time. I got to see two of my favorite former Jayhawk players up close, doing what they do on the basketball court. I left that place no longer feeling like a bandwagon Thunder fan. So ready for basketball season to start!
After the rally we met with some friends at The Anchor for dinner and after that we went to Brandi's and hung out for a while. That's the first time in several months that I had hung out and talked to Brandi for an extended period of time. I miss that! It was a really fun weekend and I came home and crashed.
Back to work all week kind of sucked. But going back to work always sucks. Nothing exciting to talk about from this week. I'm meeting Angel for dinner later today and that's pretty much all I've got on my agenda. :)
