This is my opinion, and people will disagree, feel free to and do comment, but keep the hate away or I will defriend you. Remember this is my journal.
Wow, this is a provocative title, huh? Sadly, this is not just an attempt to provoke, but my genuine opinion.
Let me start by saying I'm an atheist as some of you may know. I am not anti-religious tough.
This doesn't stop me from believing that feminism and religion do not go hand in hand, it's exactly the opposite.
Why is this? Because feminism is about women's right and the bible is anti-women. Now I will explain why I think the bible is anti-women.
Let's start out with one of the most basic ones. Ephesians 5:22-24:
"Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband
is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which
he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives
should submit to their husbands in everything."
A woman who is to submit to a man, is not a man's equal. The man that has authority over his wife, has the power. If a man rules over his wife, she doesn't rule with him.
1 Corinthians 14:34
"women should remain silent in churches. They are not allowed to speak, but must be in submission..."
Yet again an example of women should not have any authority.
Gen. 19:8
“Now behold, I have two daughters who have not had relations with man;
please let me bring them out to you, and do to them whatever you like;
only do nothing to these men, inasmuch as they have come under the
shelter of my roof,”
Lot offering his daughters instead of the angels. All I have to say about this is the how can you offer your daugthers to something like this, if you view them as a living human being, like yourself?
Deuteronomy 22:28
"If a man happens to meet a virgin who is not pledged to be married and rapes her and they are
discovered, he shall pay the girl's father fifty shekels of silver. He must marry
the girl, for he has violated her. He can never divorce her as long as he
lives."
One can be misled to think that marrying a woman to her rapist is actually beneficial for the time being, but I'm not fooled.
First of all we have to remember why the rapist is supposed to pay the father. The woman is property of her father. This is not about wronging the woman, it's about wronging her father, stealing his money. It's disgusting.
Leviticus 12:5
"But if she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as
in her menstruation. And she shall continue in the blood of her
purifying for sixty-six days."
Please keep in mind, the woman will only be unclean for one week, if it's a male child. It outright states that women are more "unclean" than males.
1 Cor. 11:7
"For a man ought not to have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man."
Women are not the glory of god, but of man. Therefore she is less than the man.
1 Peter 3:7
"Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered."
A woman is the weaker vessel. This doesn't need any explanation.
1 Tim. 2:12-14
"I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man."
This just highlights this more.
All of this is important in the discussion about women's worth in the bible. Can any one read this and say that the bible advocates women's rights?
But what about today's christians? They do not live like this.
No, but if they claim their holy book to be true (and I believe, if you say you're a christian it means all the bible) then your religion basically is anti-women, whether you live like this or not.
All of this makes sense if we think of the bible as a book written by tribal men long before anyone understood human nature. It makes much less sense if we think of this as god's true words. Not unless god is a women hating dickhead.
At least this is why I could never be a christian (aside from all the lack of evidence), and why I for my life can't understand why there is christian feminist.
