Celebrations

Draco and Harry were walking down the lane. It was raining; sharp, cold bursts falling on exposed skin and heads, but they didn’t particularly care. They didn’t care about the rain or that today was Friday, or that it was the 29th of July. All they cared about was walking, in the early evening light up the hill to Hogwarts castle. It loomed like a living thing in the distance but it didn’t set fear in hearts, oh no, it was warm and welcoming even after three years of being free from it. Though liberation wasn’t really what Harry had felt when he left it at first.

The war was over. Yet it felt like a death sentence on that last day of term. His NEWTs dutifully completed, his trunk ready and packed and waiting for the carriages to take them down to the Hogwarts Express. Then Harry thought it would be his last time climbing aboard that train and it was raining then too, though it was warm and sticky as the hot air was quickly misting over in an early summer heat wave. It wasn’t pleasant and cool like today. Their eyes had met-Harry’s and Draco’s-across the crowds of Slytherin and Gryffindor. Harry had felt something like a shock travel through him and quickly a coldness had settled in his stomach and he felt sick. He may never see Draco Malfoy again and that thought hurt more than he thought it would.

Not knowing why he pushed through the scarlet and green crowd, a flash of tacky Christmas decorations stole over his mind, but he didn’t really pay it much attention, he just wanted to get to Draco. He wanted to say good-bye. In case… in case he never saw him again.

“Potter.” It was a customary greeting but underlying it Harry heard a small sigh of relief.

“Malfoy.”

They waited in tense uncomfortable silence before Draco looked over towards him. Or down rather considering he was nearly half a foot taller.

“So this is it then,” Draco said.

“I suppose…” Harry nodded.

“I feel as if I should be unleashing a barrage of insults, but I oddly can’t think of a one,” Draco said almost airily.

“Huh… that is weird. Well, if you do happen to think of some over the summer you could always send me an owl.”

And there it was.

Draco smiled a little, “I could. I’m sure you aren’t hard to find.”

“No,” Harry smiled a little back.

“All right then,” Draco nodded. “Expect that barrage as soon as some come to me. After all, if I don’t insult you, who will?”

“Oh my uncle will take care of that,” Harry joked. “But it will mean so much more coming from you.”

“You flatter me, Potter,” Draco smirked.

“Not intentionally, I assure you,” Harry smirked back. “Well…later then.”

“See you.”

It didn’t occur to either of them that they didn’t actually say good-bye. And perhaps if one of them had, what happened never would have happened.

Now, three years later, Draco and Harry entered the castle and shook out their wet clothes. Draco cast a quick drying charm followed by a tidying charm on his hair first and foremost before drying the rest of himself and Harry. Harry felt the warmth tingle over him and the solidity of Draco’s hand in his own. After all those years, this was where they were meant to be. They entered the Great Hall together, a united front, the sound of tinkling glassware and cheers meeting them. Harry smiled.
