To whom it may concern:
The art of writing letters has deteriorated over the centuries. It was with great concern that I noted a decline in the quality of written communication throughout the course of the twentieth century. No one bothers with detail anymore. No one makes the time for it. I could discuss, at length, the effects of public education, widespread literacy, and electronic media on the general quality of prose, but I have no desire to become embroiled in a debate over the degree to which my supposedly old-fashioned and outdated sensibilities color my perceptions.
Allow me to simply say this. The literate population has access to dictionaries, thesauruses, and grammar guides. Use them.
Sincerely,
Henry Fitzroy
P.S. Were I truly chained to the conventions of earlier centuries, my signature would be nearly as long as the contents of the letter itself and accompanied by my personal seal.
