Five People Tonks Would Like to be Like

Dec 11, 2011 16:12

On the 18th of April 2007 I posted a Meme called the 5 fandom things meme. The premise was, you guys prompted me and I wrote the list. I wrote about half of these lists before real life intervened and I left fandom and writing altogether for quite some time. I am tentatively putting my toes back into writing. I know most of you probably aren't even watching my journal any longer, but I do hope to finish writing your prompts.

This is one is for i_llbedammned. She requested: Five People Tonks Would Like to be Like. Mishiki, after over four years of waiting, I really do hope you like it.

Nymphadora Tonks had been a metamorphmagus from birth; it is this wholly extraordinary thing about her that at the same time has become common place. Most of the people in her life know that she can shift her outward appearance to mirror just about anything transfigurable from her frame. She can be taller, shorter, thinner... the possibilities are cosmetically endless. What most people don’t know, however, is there are a few, deeper than the surface, things that Tonks can’t copy and that it makes her burn with jealousy.

Five People Tonks Would Like to be Like:

5) Tonks felt, really, her mother could be prudish. She just didn’t "get" Tonks’ hair, her clothes, or her taste in music. Her mother had rebelled, brilliantly, against what her family stood for, by marrying Tonks’ goofy father, but for all that rebellion she was still stiff and refined. Tonks definitely did not want to be an aristocrat; the appeal was lost on her, but there were times the delicate turn of her mother’s hand or the graceful way she swept into a room would remind her sharply just how clumsily like her father she really was.

4) MadEye Moody was almost certainly certifiably insane. "Any Auror who has the privilege of a long life, lives to be that paranoid," her mother offered as a passively-aggressive castigation of her chosen profession. Tonks didn’t envy him his battle scars necessarily, except... Madeye was what the people wanted in their aurors. He was an unsettling, intimidating, old man. She had to work twice as hard to be taken half as seriously, and she was perfectly sane.

3) Charlie Weasley went off to Romania straight out of Hogwarts, chasing his dream. Tonks never wanted to go to Romania and she started auror training almost as fast. In that year following school she was just as close to realizing her dreams as he, but she still envied the hell out of his freedom. She wondered what it felt like to just pick up and leave, rather than working hard all day just to come home and sleep in her childhood bed and hear her mother’s same old disapprovals.

2) Tonks would deny it, but once or twice, she had simply wished to be a muggle girl, with the mundane magicless problems that could offer. Fighting the good fight was noble, and everything she’d signed up for, but sometimes ignorance can blissfully be its own reward.

1) Tonks never envied her head of house anything while she was at Hogwarts. Sure he was clever and as sly a Slytherin as they came, but Professor Snape was greasy, surly and unpleasant, pretty much guaranteeing his own dislike. She respected the man, but she didn’t want anything he had... that was until she saw the way he could catch Remus’ eye from across the room. After the betrayal, after Dumbledore’s funeral, even after their marriage, Tonks had Remus’ polite attention, but she never had anything like the passion Snape seemed to garner, even if it was now mostly in the form of rage.

This is quick and dirty, but my sincere apologies for any misspellings or grammar oddities.
