Japan invaded him and he lost terribly despite attempts at defense by British and Canadian forces. It was a terrible defeat that's left him with a few scars with a surrender on Christmas 1941 after 18 days of fighting. He lives in Japan's rarely visited house now, subject to a brutal rule by the other nation. Unlike the 'model colony' of Taiwan, the people of Hong Kong live in fear of the Japanese soldiers.
Hong Kong hates Japan's rule but confines his disgust to sharp glares, snarling in silence, more expressionless than ever. He is forced to talk in Japanese, read in Japanese and so on and so forth and is physically and verbally punished for speaking any English at all.
He feels humiliated and angry, seething under a curiously frigid front. Many of the things he was once proud of, his banks, his economy, his relationship with England, has been torn away from him. His people too, number less than ever as Japan ships over half his people back to the Mainland so that the impact of scarce food and water supplies is lessened.
Though confined to his room, his support goes towards his resistance fighters who use guerilla warfare to try and combat the Japanese occupation. Information being his only weapon now, he secretly informs them of the location of important POWs for them to rescue and any weaknesses he can identify in the Japanese. These secret efforts, a last desperate attempt at freedom, are the only thing that keep him sane as the trauma of losing so many of his people and the bloodshed of the Battle of Hong Kong and subsequent Japanese crimes towards him have begun to tear him apart. With hate and despair consuming him, he tries very hard not to show any emotion, for fear of a total breakdown.
When the Allies lost the war he just totally Blue Screen of Deathed. He sulks for the most part, trying to maintain some sort of composure. More and more often, his behaviour is erratic, snapping at people (except Japan) and displaying less and less patience. Total meltdown seems just around the corner.
