A followup on the stupidity that is fox

Fox is canceling arrested development because it can only get 4 million viewers. apparently malcolm and that 70's show are getting canceled too, but i didn't even know there were still new ones of those being made. (Wasn't 70's already in the 80's anyway? or was it just '79 4 years in a row?)

Rumor has it that other networks are considering picking up arrested (ABC and Showtime). I guess abc is hard up for comedies. Im not gonna pay for showtime, but ill get the dvd's when they come out...

This kinda makes me wonder about if anyone is working on a direct-to-dvd (or other non-broadcast medium) series. How much money does a tv show make off a network versus dvd sales anyway? aren't there more hoops and junk to deal with on tv anyway? I have no data, but i would wager that shows like firefly, arrested, and family guy made more $ on dvd than during their broadcast and rerun schedules. I mean, with more dvrs coming, who even watches tv ads anymore?

I guess dvd would be kind of a hard model for a new show, b/c nobody is going to pay 50$ for a full 'season' of shows they dont know anything about. maybe this is where the video download services like apple and google come in. I'd pay a couple bucks an episode if i could burn em to a dvd or transfer the license towards the purchase of the disks....

i wouldn't be the first to suggest that broadcast tv is dying, but maybe a show like one of the aforementioned fox shows or some of the miniseries on scifi that have a decent following would be an intersting test market for this kind of stuff. Lets face it, people who like dr phil are not going to be the people who drive/test this idea. I think it'd be cool to have my pvr able to download stuff to watch whenever i wanted - "Oh, a new scrubs was release last night. lets watch that!" Broadcast wont go away because of sporting events and other live-type stuff. (like the morons who watch the 'news': inaccurate 'reports' of what happened 3 days ago, followed by 15 minutes of "IT'S GON' RAIN!! (maybe)"

Oh well, if it keeps family guy alive, restores futurama, arrested, or firefly, or allows new 'edgier' and creative shows to find an audience, bring it on. Im getting sick of 14 million crime dramas(suddenly, CSI:Terre Haute doesn't seem too far away), and fox pulling stupid scheduling tricks. Showing your show for 6 hours in 2 days is not a good way for people to like it. Prison Break made me angry over the summer(who the hell knows how thats staying around for a second half-season or whatever...), and now that 24 did it, im just boycotting 24 for no good reason.

And don't even get me started on 'American Idol'
