Su awoke early Saturday morning to warm kisses all over her face. She stretched languidly and grinned. "Good morning to you too, Jasper." She stroked his silky ears and felt his tail pound against her leg. Su had loved the cocker spaniel from the moment she started volunteering at the Shelter, and had adopted him the previous week. Groaning slightly, she rolled out of bed and got dressed as Jasper ran circles around the room, toenails clicking on the wooden floor.

As they walked through Stoatshead, stopping at every bush so Jasper could sniff, Su had ample time to think. Her mother had sent yet another letter encouraging her to come back to Shanghai, but Su knew it was impossible. Stoatshead was her home. She had found a job that she adored, and was good at. She had made so many friends. Su smiled fondly, thinking of Oliver dancing with her at the Hammerside ball. Of Lee coming down twice in the week since she'd brought Jasper home, ostentatiously to see if she needed any help with the new addition but clearly delighted to play with the dog. Of exotic meals with Rabastan at the stone church, and how he invariably caught her swearing in Mandarin. Of elegant teas with Narcissa. Her disastrous date with Harry, and how they'd parted as friends. Laughing with Mandy as they walked dogs together, or having lunch with Luna or a night in with Lisa. The amazing women she'd met through the support group.

Su tightened her hold on Jasper's leash as a squirrel ran by, and he gave her a contemptuous look, as if he'd never intended to chase it. She laughed. So many of her friends were pairing off and getting engaged. It was inevitable, probably, that people would want to settle down after so many years of war. But Su was perfectly happy on her own. Especially with Jasper in her life. She crouched down and he rushed over to be patted before she could even call his name. Yes, life was good.
