Summary: Growing sometimes means moving on
Completion: Complete
Dennis had never been first at anything; not the first out of the womb, not the first in their family to do magic, not the first to Hogwarts, nor the first to Stoatshead. This was partly due to Colin’s being the first born, and partly due to their own personalities. Dennis had never even had any friends aside from Colin; they were their own world of two or, with their parents, a universe of four.
And when Colin left to cover the war, Dennis stagnated. Not much changed afterwards, initially. Dennis followed Colin, like he always had, this time to Stoatshead.
But then things changed. Dennis made his own friends, his own world, where Colin was a part but not central. And as Colin moved inward, becoming insular with his family, Dennis moved outward, starting his own business and exploring what he was capable of.
It was if, Dennis reflected, he’d needed to finish what should have been completed at school; learning to live his own existance. And, he’d done that finally, albeit with the safety net of Colin nearby, but he hadn’t used it.
And now he was stuck again, feeling like he was being called forward, and this time he would listen; he would make the leap.
Maybe Michael would go with him, he hoped so, but if not…. Well, Dennis couldn’t fool himself, it would be a learning experience feeling what a broken heart was like, but he’s survive and grow. He’d made a choice to leave Stoatshead.
He’d come back to see Colin, his nephews and his friends, but only to visit. Of course where he was going hadn’t been decided yet. That would depend on Michael. If Michael wanted to go with him to rebuild Hogsmeade (as Dennis couldn’t ask him to go the other place, it would be too far away from Michael’s Dad), then they could grow together.
If, Michael chose the other (or neither), it would be Sedona.
No safety net this time, and Dennis was surprised that the prospect didn’t scare him. On the contrary, it thrilled him. He guessed he was a Gryffindor after all.
