The chill was relentless. Not only was it cold outside, but even after working on sealing every crack, every tiny hole in the shop and living quarters, and putting up large drapes and blankets on all of the windows, the fireplace and wood stove just couldn't keep the place warm.
Ollivander wasn't used to this kind of extreme weather. His bones seemed to crackle when he moved, as if they were frozen solid and would break if he fell too hard or crack if he warmed up too fast. And it wasn't just his bones that were affected by the weather. As he got out of his bed and donned layer after layer of clothing, robes, and even a woolen blanket, Ollivander realized that being this cold just wasn't natural. He could see people out on the street getting things ready for the day, and they weren't bundled up nearly as tightly as he was.
He had a fever. Of that he was quite sure. Just what to do about it was another matter.
The daily routine went ahead as uaual, although perhaps a bit slower than any other day. Water for tea first, then start on the toast. Although this morning, he didn't feel like eating anything. Lots of hot tea. Nothing solid, nothing... cold.
Merlin. this was going to be difficult.
After starting the toast, the old man sat down at his small kitchen table to rest. Really, that dizziness was a little disconcerting. At least January wasn't a very busy month for him. At least it wasn't likely he'd have many people visit him today. He considered for a moment leaving the "closed" sign up on the door and not even opening up shop. However, it was a Tuesday, and since he was open the previous day, there seemed to be no reason for him not to open today.
Ollivander lay his head on his arms on the table. He'd go and change the sign after he finished his tea. And while waiting for the water to boil, he could take a little nap.
