Harriet yawned as she shut the door behind her. The few scant hours of sleep hadn't alleviated her weariness, after they had been in this booth for seemingly days on end. Her witticisms had degraded to boring fact by fact commentary by the time the Canada/States match had ended - her last supply of Pepper-Up had been drank hours before. Though she knew they would never agree, she thought the players had it easier. They just had to fly and throw a few stupid balls through a hoop - she had to sound coherent and say something interesting for hours on end, a much harder feat ( ... )

"Play by play," Garvin remarked idly, watching as the players gathered for pre-game talks from their captains. His gaze lingered on the British captain. He whistled softly, taking in the appearance of her uniform as the rain soaked it too her figure. Harriet shot him an irritated look, and he held up his hands in surrender. "I'm not blind Harry, she's bloody hot. And, if rumour has it - single."

He had been pondering the question since he'd realized who was playing in the next match, and tapped his chin in thought. "Britain," he said finally. "Not an easy call, but they've defied expectations so far. They've got all the pieces. They might be inexperienced pieces...but, well, they fly well together. And they've got luck on their side. If I didn't know about the stringest testing, I might think they were on some felix felicitasHe shrugged, "Don't think it can last, but I didn't think they'd beat Bulgaria either. So I refuse to bet against them anymore ( ... )

"Backup's weak at the keeper position," Harriet remarked, "but he's hardly likely to get playing time unless Wood goes down. Then again, I never thought Potter could pull it off, but he has, hasn't it? At least for now. Could just be beginner's luck - seen that time and again. Some flash in the pan sensation that gets lucky, gets adoration, then plummets faster then the original Nimbus after a particularly long flight ( ... )

"Ah, but they've got the prettiest chasers in Britain," he remarked with a wink, "and three of the most talented - and great reserves to boot. Played with Rufus back in the day, and though I'm biased by what a nice bloke he is - shame about his family - he's still one of the top chasers out there ( ... )

An hour into the game, and the score was tight - though the Irish looked to be having their way with the British, the latter only holding onto the respectable score by the skin of their teeth. But, it wasn't the first time they'd turned it on in the latter hald of the match, and (for the sake of his bet) it hopefully wouldn't be the last, if they could manage it again ( ... )

As Garvin nearly had an apolexy, Harriet leaned forward, "You'll all remember Flint from his time with the Falmouth Falcons. Excellent chaser at the time, likely a lock for the last World Cup if it had been held. And if you don't think that in itself gave him enough of a reason to take an interest in the end of the war ( ... )

He might have been jubilant, but he wasn't ignorant enough to miss Harriet's innuendo. He shot her a look it was probably best the fans in the stand couldn't see. "Hardly," he remarked, continuing instead of just letting the subject drop, "though occasionally I have to resort to that, I still find others do a much better job at broom polishing than I do - so I let them take better care of that instrument than I can ( ... )

Though she'd started the game of innuendo, Harriet felt herself flush slightly at his very blatant remark. But she wouldn't let herself be bested by Garvin. A matter of pride if nothing else. "It's not hands that I find do the best job," she remarked in a mild tone, raising an eyebrow. Enough infusion in the words to have him and half the stadium understanding her meeting, the more innocent half in the dark thinking she meant a broom servicing kit by her comment ( ... )
