Never in a million years had Cornelia thought she'd be standing in her back garden trying to coax an owl down out of a tree. It had been years since she'd sent anything by owl post, but she hadn't been able to think of a better way to get in touch with Ernie. Not without raising Eleanor's suspicions, at least.

She'd been doing quite a lot of thinking since Eleanor had accidentally told her about Ernie running off to London last Sunday. She knew she'd made mistakes as a mother, not the least of which had involved Eleanor and her last boyfriend. She had been so relieved to see her on her way to settling down permanently in the Muggle world that she had buried her head in the sand about a lot of the mans faults. In the end, that relationship had ended badly, and her daughter had ended up heartbroken.

Now she was getting married. Not surprisingly, it was Janus who was having so much trouble with it. Saying that Eleanor was too young, that they weren't ready for such a commitment. Cornelia had been the one who had told him that they should trust Eleanor's judgment, and demanded that he keep his nose out of it. She'd thought that her daughter had found someone who treated her as she deserved to be treated. Perhaps, however, she'd been burying her head in the sand once more.

She'd thought of little else over the last week. She needed to be certain that she wasn't letting her personal biases cloud her own judgment, but she was fairly confident that wasn't the problem at all. She just needed to know that her daughter wasn't making a huge mistake marrying a man with so many personal problems, but she wasn't going to get anywhere speaking to Eleanor about it. She needed to have this discussion with Ernie. Unlike Eleanor, she was not worried about 'compromising the progress he'd made'. If a discussion with his future wife's mother was enough to cause that, well, Cornelia would know all she needed.

So here she was, scattering bits of bread on the grass in front of her, and trying to convince a rather stubborn owl to come to her. Finally it flew down from it's perch and landed on the ground at her feet. She spent a few minutes with the bird, trying to decide if it was capable of the task at hand. It may not have been a proper post owl, but Cornelia decided that it seemed intelligent enough to understand what she was asking of it. So she pulled a letter out of her pocket and attached it to the birds leg before sending it on it's way.

Dear Ernie,

I know that it must come as a surprise to you to be receiving an owl from me. I am certain that Eleanor has told you that I haven't found much use in the magical way of doing things, however, I felt it would be the best way to contact you. Especially since Henry tells me that you don't seem to be fond of Eleanor's mobile.

There is also the fact that Eleanor isn't aware of my intentions, and I have no doubt that she would try to dissuade me if she were. I don't think she had meant for her father or I to find out, but she let slip that you had been away. After prodding a bit, she told me the reasons. While she assures me that there is no need for me to worry, I find that I am worried none-the-less.

I want you to know that until now I have never had any reservations about the two of you getting married. On the contrary, I've thought that the two of you seem well suited, and it's obvious that you love each other very much. However, love isn't always enough to sustain a marriage, and can, in fact, blind you to problems that can escalate over time. It is my concern that Eleanor may be doing that now. I was hoping that you would be willing to speak with me and put my mind at ease.

I can meet you wherever you feel most comfortable, and at a time that best suits your schedule. Although, I would prefer to do this sooner rather than later. I would really like for this to be settled before the wedding itself.

Sincerely,
Cornelia
