The morning had been, well, not entirely a disaster, but a bit rocky.

First, Maire held some strong opinions about appropriate breakfast foods. None of them included anything resembling bannitza or boza. Viktor had eaten these things for breakfast virtually every day of his life, so it hadn't actually occurred to him Maire might have other ideas. Eventually, they reached a compromise: she had had orange juice and a small bit of the bannitza, and he'd pulled down the cookbook left over the refrigerator and worked out enough of what she wanted to satisfy. He didn't have any brown soda bread or sausage, but he did conjure a parchment and quill and use one of the funny sticking peperuda to affix it onto the refrigerator and wrote on it 'Maire's brown bread,' 'white pudding,' (he was going to have to learn what that was, but perhaps someone at the market would know) and 'sausage.' "This is for look, at market," he said. "O. K? We are look, and see what we finding."

"Now?"

"No. We are look, when we go. Is maybe not today. But, I am think, you will like bannitza, and I will like your kind, after."

She scowled a while longer, but did eat what he put before her, declaring his bacon "perfect," and his fried eggs "too flat" before she ate them.

It was a start.

Their next difficulty arose regarding his expectations for cleaning her teeth. She didn't want to, and he thought she should. Finally, he told her to hold very still and sent a rather sharper-than-necessary tooth-scouring charm at one tooth, just for a moment. She yelped, and he stopped. "I am have you with clean teeth, but I am think you are not like that way. Way with brush is being pleasing-er."

She scowled again, but cleaned her teeth. She didn't do a particularly good job, but he thought the effort was adequate.

And then, there was the issue of the lack of a dog. Brenna, if turned out, had a dog, and his failure to have one was deemed a fault.

He sighed. "I am not have dog, because, dog is make my eyes have cry, and my nose have. I am not know word. With sneeze, only more. Is no good."

"Then I want a cat!"

"We are see. We will check, if there are cat, or another... perhaps rabbit. Or other small chewing animal. Also, not today."

That was the last argument for several minutes, until Maire complained she was bored.

Viktor heldout his hand. "I think, we are go for walk and see what we are find. Yes?"

"Walk?"

"Yes. You must have shoe."

"That's not fun!"

"Perhaps we are find fun, while we are walk."

She sighed, but put on her shoes, though since she put them on the wrong feet, he had to stoop and help her.

"I have see, in recently day, some posting with Quidditch. Perhaps we are find."

"What's Quidditch?" She wasn't sullen, exactly, but wasn't very cheerful, either. Perhaps she was not enthusiastic about mornings.

"Quidditch is sport. With fly and ball. On broom. Your mother is not tell you?"

Her eyebrows went up, but she held out her hand at him. "We should go see that."

He nodded. "Let's see if my friend Hermione wants to go."

"Is Her. Her."

"Hermione. Her, my, oh, knee. I am also having trouble with say, but I am learn."

"Her-my-oh-knee like Declan?"

"I am not know Declan. I am think, she is not very like."

Maire nodded and they set off west toward Alpha.
