Rabastan was reclined comfortably sideways on her sofa with Narcissa's back pressed against his chest, listening to soft music and talking. They had both been busy with little time to simply sit and enjoy each other's company this past week, and he missed it. This simple connection meant a great deal to him and he missed it whenever he or she was away. Rabastan had been running his fingers through her glorious hair, enjoying the texture and drawing in the scent, while he concentrated on the sound of her voice telling him about her week.
When she finished and asked about his week, he avoided the work he had been doing with the Auror Department as it was all related to Voldemort, which she disliked being reminded of, and started with his
conversation with Su Li, the previous Saturday. He was pleased that Su had accepted the position managing the art gallery. Rabastan asked Narcissa if she thought she could use her connections to help him obtain training for Miss Li with a magical gallery. He would be more than willing to pay her contacts a consulting fee for their efforts. He moved on through his week, finally ending up by telling her about taking Amelia and Wally to the Halloween Fete yesterday and the children's excitement over the unicorns and games.
Telling Cissy about his conversation with Su and the Halloween Fete brought the idea of the masquerade back to mind. Rabastan had been considering off and on all week whether or not he might like to attend. Normally Narcissa and he limited their excursions within Stoatshead Hill to the Five Alarm, where they occasionally had lunch. More often than not, they used it as the place where they discussed business and conducted negotiations between Familiar Ground and the Lestrange Family. It was a simple way for them to keep their personal lives separate from their business dealings. Rabastan had not considered asking her to attend any outings with him in Stoats before. While they sometimes took in the sights, attended an event, opera, ballet or concert, and occasionally went dining and dancing, they almost always did those sorts of things outside of Stoatshead Hill. At first it was because there few cultural activities available here in town. After they became more than just old friends, he had been cautious not to do anything that might draw attention to the change in their relationship. He had feared that being seen with her for anything more than lunch or a pleasant conversation in public might call attention to them that she did not need. Rabastan wanted to do nothing that would make her separation and divorce from Lucius more difficult than it was, or cause her any embarrasment from public speculation regarding the two of them as a couple. However, every time Rabastan had considered attending the masquerade, he thought of having Narcissa there beside him.
There was some chance that if she agreed to accompany him, whatever costumes they fashioned, they could be recognized, but he doubted there would be much harm in that. While he intended to spend much of the evening dancing with her, Rabastan was normally discreet in public and he had successfully escorted her to events elsewhere as an old friend. He could not think of any reason he could not do so again here in Stoatshead Hill. He finally decided that the thing to do was ask. Narcissa was perfectly capable of telling him whether or not she wished to go.
Rabastan gently nuzzled her ear and neck with his goatee. "Narcissa, we have not been dancing in some time. What do you think about the two of us attending this Wednesday's Halloween Masquerade at the local Community Centre?"
