Caradoc flicked his wand to close the door to the classroom as the bell sounded and looked around at the sea of nervous faces. "You all look as if you're about to serve detention. Lighten up, people, this'll be fun!"
"Everybody stand up. If your wand is currently on your person, but not sticking out of your back pocket, you may line up in front of the door. Mr. Osbourne, can you tell Mr. Charles why a back pocket is a very bad place to carry a wand?"
"Because you can shoot off your buttock, Sir?" The boy said tentatively and then blushed as the entire class of 11 year olds sniggered at the word buttock.
"Are you asking or telling, Mr. Osbourne? Actually, that is not the reason. Does anyone know?" Caradoc raised an eyebrow, as no one volunteered. "Ah, I feel the need for additional homework. Perhaps if you re-read the chapter on basic wand care..." Many hands went up, "Much better. Proceed, please," he pointed at the girl closest to the boy who took the wand out of his back pocket.
"Please Professor, it is because if you sit down too fast or hard, you might snap it."
"Thank you. That is correct and you have earned five points. Barnaby Chumhump did manage to shoot off a buttock in 1892, but One Cheek Chump is the last documented case of buttock loss from a wizard's or witch's own wand. There are however, many cases of wands being cracked, snapped and broken beyond repair because their owners sat on them. Therefore, where should you keep your wand?" Another five points were awarded and Caradoc had those students who had their wands in their bags remove them and re-stow their gear before joining the queue.
"Alright then, let's head outside." Caradoc chuckled at the looks on their faces. "What? You didn't think we'd have our practical in a stuffy old classroom on a beautiful day like today, did you? Around the East side, if you please." Caradoc had spent the morning setting up simple stations where the students could demonstrate the things they had learned the first month of lessons. Basic wand care, channeling their magic through their wands and demonstrating control, firing off colored sparks, lighting a candle and casting a lumos. Simple spells and maintenance that all new wand wielders needed to know.
Caradoc broke them into groups. "Now, I forgot to mention something important about this test. Failure is not an option. You get one go per round to show you have mastered the skill. Once you've done it, you move on to the next station. When you've finished all the stations, you get to go sit under the trees over there and chat, or you can kick around the soccer... footballs. If you don't get it on your first go, move on to the next station, then come back to ones you still need to demonstrate for another go. You get as many chances as you need. The purpose is to show that you've learned. Extra points for getting it in one, but everybody should pass. The faster you all get through, the more time to play."
"Got it? Okay, remember to rotate to the left. Let's play!"
