Alastor Moody hadn't been home in awhile. Normally, Kingsley didn't think much of it. Not last night. He had a Bad Feeling about Turpin's barely repressed glee at the idea that the book Old Slughorn had might be dangerous. He had hoped for a word or two with Alastor, both to learn more about Turpin -- a subject he had declined discussing after she pushed a couple too many buttons the night he met her at the Five Alarm -- and to find out if his friend had any more information than he did on the Moriarty.

Any good Auror -- not those hotshot cowboys who blew through abbreviated training, but the honest to goodness, well-trained, professional, Dark Wizard catchers -- could tell you that the best defense was the one you never had to raise in the first place. The kind of defense that only happened with proper planning, constant vigilance, and brain over brawn. Not that Kingsley felt brawn lacked a place in an Auror's bag of tricks, but it took a back seat to brains every time. Work smart first. Work hard second. Work tough last. Kingsley may be a big bloke, but it was his Ravenclaw brains and natural instincts for defense that earned him his spot in Auror training, not his size.

This morning, as Kingsley approached the DoM on the other side of Albus Avenue from his house and knocked precisely at 9 o'clock for admittance, his natural instincts for defense were telling him he'd be better off farming.
