Rabastan had been sleeping peacefully just moments before, but now he was awake and smiling. He gently eased his shoulder out from under Cissy's head and pulled the covers back around her to keep her warm in his absence. She shifted slightly, but settled as drew the pair of lounge pants he kept there from his drawer in her bureau. Collecting his wands and journal, he quietly padded out to the kitchen.
He considered coffee, but settled on tea. Rabastan opened his journal and scratched down a few rough notes while he waited for the water to boil. He could have used magic to heat the water, but he thought tea always tasted better with the water heated to a boil by flame. He did cast a silencing spell so the whistle of the kettle would not disturb Narcissa or the kneazles sleeping in the other room. When he had it ready, he took the tray out to the dining room to work. The chairs were more comfortable than those in the kitchen and the table provided more space to spread out.
And spread out he did.
A conversation he overheard while in Muggle London yesterday, combined with a comment Cissy had made about one of his original charms the night before, came together while he was sleeping to give him a fresh approach to one of his pet ideas that he had yet to be able to put into practice. Scattered about the dining table were a number of transfigured items, serviceable sketches -- Rabastan was certainly no Rodolphus when it came to drawing -- and diagrams, outlines of charm strings, and a two completely new spells he had to devise to get what he wanted. He was so close. He could feel it. He almost had it, and if the seers were right, in a day or two they were going to need this. He had to make it work. He just needed to figure out how to manipulate this last little charm into place.
