Date: 27 August 2005 Characters: Horace Slughorn, Lisa Turpin Location: Department of Mysteries Status: Private. Summary: Lisa writes to Professor Slughorn to inform him of their pending appointment. Completion: Incomplete.
Horace read the brusque note with a frown, wondering if his former student was fully aware of how pernicious Moriarty's spells could be. Only one way to find out, of course... He put quill to parchment and composed a reply, which he sent off with Paracelsus.
Miss Turpin,
Tomorrow morning is perfectly acceptable, though I'm a little surprised that you have been able to make arrangements so quickly. It's essential, of course, that anyone coming into contact with the book must be fully protected and/or incapable (by ability or personal inclination) of using its magic; fortunately I have no desire for power for its own sake, which seems to be the main thing that it tries to trigger, but even I have to be on my guard when handling it, and due to a mishap in setting the wards last month have had some fairly vivid reminders of its effect.
Now that I have repaired the wards it should be safe in situ, but the last time it was moved the ministry felt it necessary to have a group of warded squibs move it from the vaults to the protective transit case, and from the case to my own warded cupboard. I would strongly advise a similar arrangement when you transfer it to your vaults.
I'll look forward to seeing you tomorrow, and will of course lay on refreshments for you and any colleagues and/or assistants that accompany you.
