Marcus told himself over and over that it was just a stupid macaroni necklace.

But he couldn’t stop smiling because of it.

He’d never forget the look of anticipation on Violet’s face when she’d handed the necklace to him carefully wrapped in the same paper he’d used with her toy broom. He knew it had taken her hours to make and he thought of the effort she’d made to give him this special gift. He promised her he’d wear it all day and as he walked along the streets of Stoatshead, he understood that the necklace he wore around his neck was something he’d prize for the rest of his life along with the simple words Violet had shared with him.

Daddy.

Happy Birthday

I love you.

Thank you for being my daddy

Violet

He wouldn’t have traded that simple card for a hundred friends celebrating his birthday with him. Marcus could barely read his daughter’s scrawl through the yellow sun and the green grass she’d drawn but the card had captivated him and he’d sat in his flat staring at it for twenty minutes after he’d gone home. Then he’d put the card in the framed picture of he and Violet that Tracey had given him, a gift that had shocked and surprised him before he left for Padma’s.

As he pushed his way through the Arts Festival crowd, he received a few hostile stares when he moved people aside but they looked away quickly when he gave them a warning glance. Marcus wanted to see Padma now and he wouldn't be delayed. He planned on spending the rest of the day and then the night with her alone which to him was a perfect day.

He thought that he’d come to the realization that he loved her when she gave him his broom. He knew it, could feel it in the fiber of his soul but he hadn’t said anything yet because he was hesitant to do that right now. Marcus didn’t know exactly how to explain what he felt for her and he didn’t know her exact feelings although he thought she shared the same sentiment. But most of all, he knew that the time had to be right when he did say it.

Marcus felt the gentle rise of the ground under his feet that told him he was close to Padma’s. As he lifted his eyes and looked at the observatory, he thought about the first kiss they’d share when he arrived, the first time he’d wrap his arms around her, the first smile she’d give him and he realized that even though they shared these things daily, he’d never tire of them.

As he walked up the hill, he thought back to his birthday last year, the dingy tavern in Berlin where he’d gotten knackered and then gone home with a woman he’d met there. That was his life and all he knew then but Marcus couldn’t even imagine going back to that lifestyle anymore.

Stopping along the path leading up to Padma’s home, his mind wandered as he thought of the time they’d shared since they’d found each other months ago. The instant attraction he’d felt for her when he’d seen her by the river. The absolute need and raw lust they shared that was so evident during their first date, making love to her near the lake by his parents’ manor, and the kiss they’d shared at Quidditch Day that showed him the depth of the feelings she had for him.

His life had changed so much in one short year. He was no longer the last of the Flints, the rage he’d let control him before was still there but it was caged now and he was learning to not let it possess him. Most of all, he wasn’t alone anymore. He didn’t need the masses to adore him and he knew most people were like Justin who’d acted as if Marcus were going to eat him alive or like the Weasley twin who treated him like a pariah.

But Marcus had his daughter and he had Padma. That was more than enough for him and as he apparated into Padma’s front entry, he realized that for the first time in his life, he was truly content.
