A dinner invitation

Aug 05, 2007 19:40

Date: August 5, 2005
Character(s): Kenneth Towler and Nymphadora Tonks
Location: Kenneth's Home
Status: Private
Summary: Inviting a woman to dinner is more complicated than it would appear.
Completion: Complete.

As a silent protest against the way he'd been roped into dating Nymphadora Tonks, Kenneth had put off issuing the actual invitation until the weekend...a delay that had extended until Sunday evening and was turning into a somewhat irksome chore.

"Why did I ever agree to this?" he enquired of Cassie, who looked down on him from her perch on a shelf with not a speck of sympathy. He'd written and discarded two attempts already. Kenneth had been completely sincere in his assertion that he would do this correctly or not at all. And the latter was, unfortunately, not an option.

"You are not being helpful," Kenneth scolded Cassie before returning his attention to the parchment on his desk.

"This is ridiculous," he muttered, as he picked up his quill once more. Granted, it had been ages since he'd formally asked someone to dinner, but it shouldn't be as complicated as a first-rate Shock Spell.

Dear Ms. Tonks,

There, that, seemed an acceptable opening, unless Nymphadora Tonks had even more serious address issues than her mother alluded to.

I would be delighted--Kenneth stopped right there. That was a royal lie, diplomatic or not, and he refused to indulge in such sentiment. He vanished the sentence and decided to take a straightforward approach.

I am writing to enquire if you would be free to join me for dinner at Socks at 7pm on --Kenneth thought about the date and decided a weekend night would be subject to fewer possible interruptions--Sunday, August 12? If the time or date is not to your convenience, I am certain we can arrive at a more acceptable one.

Sincerely,

Kenneth Towler

Kenneth re-read the text and, satisfied, sealed the parchment with his family crest, and sent it off to Nymphadora Tonks by Owl. Then he headed into his kitchen for a shot of whisky he'd obtained for his father, but hadn't yet dispatched to Canada.
