Completion: Complete
One major drawback to being a list maker was the inability to act spontaneously. Hermione rarely ever made impulse decisions, preferring to consider Pros and Cons and make list after list in her mind to analyze any important decision. Over the last two days, she had been forced to admit that her choice to inquire about the Personal Assistant position available with Blaise Zabini had not been thoroughly considered. Sure, she had made a standard list that usually accompanied any major decision that was not horcrux hunt related, but she’d now had a couple of days to consider it more in depth.
While the position sounded ideal for her qualifications, other than the lack of actual job experience, she honestly couldn’t see herself being happy in such a position. She had limited choices, of course, and it was probably foolish to hold out for something that she felt fit her better, but she’d managed to survive seven years with very little. She was alive and has spent the majority of her life fighting a war and helping Harry. The idea of going to work for someone she didn’t even know and taking direct orders just didn’t particularly appeal to her. The position sounded challenging, which had been what first caught her attention, but she thought it was more suitable for someone else. Her suspicions of Zabini were still present, of course. That hadn’t changed. However, she suspected that she was probably overreacting, and it wasn’t worth the effort to confirm that she was paranoid.
She had no idea what might suit her, in all honesty, but she couldn’t deny that this position didn’t excite her the way it should. It wasn’t fair to interview and waste any more of Zabini’s time, especially when he probably had candidates who were as excited as they should be at such an opportunity. She didn’t have her NEWTs, so she couldn’t work for the Ministry based on their previous criteria, but she couldn’t help wondering if the rules on such things would be more lax considering the last few years. She rather liked the thought of working with magical creatures, a passion that she’d had since she was younger, or possibly something with Muggle relations, as Muggle culture seemed to be more present in their world than ever before. There was also a possibility of working at the library, an idea that she found rather appealing.
If she had unlimited funds, of course, she’d attempt to set up a bookstore and have her creatures’ rights cause on the side. Despite lodging and assumedly businesses being rent free, there were costs for inventory, employees, and general maintenance, so it wasn’t something she could really focus on unless she had some sort of capital. She refused to ask her parents for a loan, and Harry was already paying for their food and necessities. She’d have to give it more thought, though, as she found the idea very appealing. Perhaps Harry and Ron would have some ideas. In the meantime, she needed to owl Zabini and apologize for wasting his time.
***************
Dear Mister Zabini,
I apologize for the lack of notice, but I regretfully must cancel our interview for later this morning. After careful deliberation and several more lists, I’ve reached that the conclusion that I would be ill suited for the position as your personal assistant.
Thank you for your time, both in responding to my inquiries as well as arranging an interview. I wish you luck in finding someone qualified that will be able to give the position their full attention.
Best regards,
Hermione J. Granger
