With the English national Quidditch team tryouts coming up quickly, Ron had busier than usual. He'd continued practicing for the Keeper spot, going flying every evening after work. By himself he could only do defensive maneuvers, but at least now there were actual Quidditch goals he could practice in front of. He'd noticed a couple other people practicing for the Keeper spot; their skills were a lot more polished than his, and he figured they had more talent too. Still, he was sure he was at least as stubborn as they were, and if he didn't get picked for the national team it wouldn't be for lack of trying ( ... )

"Hi, Ron," Lavender said with a smile as he kissed her forehead. She looked up at him, glad that he didn't look too tired from all the Quidditch training he had been doing. Lavender knew how nervous he could get, and hoped that a night out at Xanadu would distract him from that a little.

She fingered the hem of his shirt. "This looks good on you," she told him honestly. "Is it new?"

Her fingers on the hem of his shirt were making his mind wander somewhere it was best not to go just yet - not if they wanted to actually leave her flat and go dancing. "Thanks, and yeah, pretty new," he explained. "Gin brought it back for me a couple months ago. She went overseas - Russia or Greece or somewhere, I forget - and got this shirt for me. It's not nearly this shiny usually but I charmed it to make it look more like something to wear at a dance club. I felt like a right slob the first time we were there. Is that dress new? Don't think I've seen it before."

It was all he could do to resist a very strong urge to pull one of the slender straps off her shoulder and kiss his way up her neck, but he knew they really wouldn't leave the flat if he did that. "You ready to go?"

"It looks good. Your sister's obviously got good taste." Lavender shrugged. "Kind of new. I mean, I haven't worn it much. Haven't had a chance to, really. Tonight it kind of called to me."

The way Ron looked at her made her feel a little warm and she nodded quickly. It would be easy to ignore their plans to go to the club and just stay home, but she'd been looking forward to going out all day. "Yeah, I'm ready."

Leaving her flat, Lavender locked her door and they made their way downstairs and out of Copper Towers. Seeing the bad weather outside, she wrinkled her nose. "I think we should Apparate."

When Lavender touched his cheek, Ron felt a wave of shame and guilt. He loved her so much it hurt, but how could he love her as much as he believed he did if he was panting after some random bloke? The whole situation was making his head hurt, so he really wasn't lying when he'd said he didn't feel too well.

"Yeah, my place," he said distractedly, barely feeling her take his hand and start leading him out of the club, their drinks abandoned on the table. "Hope the weather's a little better now. Might splinch myself if I tried to Apparate." As they left the club, he pulled out his wand and cast an Impervius charm on himself and Lavender, then led the way to his flat. Still holding her hand, he walked silently beside her along River Road until they reached River Place.

Lavender held Ron's hand as they made their way to River Place, thinking that he'd probably feel better in his own place than at her flat. Every time she turned her head to look up at him and try to say something, though, she had no idea what to say. Ron looked worried and distracted and Lavender had no idea what to say to him.

In River Place, they took the lift and Lavender leant back against the wall, pursing her lips for a moment before she sighed. "Feeling any better?"

"Not really, but thanks for asking," he said, biting his lip. The ride up to sixth floor seemed to take forever, Ron standing slightly apart from Lavender, trying to gather his thoughts. When they reached their destination, he let her go out ahead of him though his flat wasn't far. Checking the wards on his flat (a habit Hermione had taught him), Ron unlocked the door and let Lavender in ahead of him. She took a seat at the end of the sofa near the window, perched on the edge, waiting for him ( ... )

Lavender started getting more wary when Ron sat down at the opposite end of the sofa to her. She bit her lip, nearly asking him if he wanted a drink of water - Ron looked so caught up in his thoughts that she couldn't bring herself to interupt him.

His question threw her; Lavender blinked, trying to wonder why he was asking her. "Of course I do! Why?" She thought back to the club with a growing feeling of dismay. Who had he been looking at? Was that why he'd started acting so strangely?
