Greg stood on the bank of the river and stared down into the water. Surely he had to be barking mad to be considering this. Even though it was summer, the water in the river was not warm by any stretch of the imagination. Still, he’d said he would do this and he’d really put it off long enough. At least he’d remembered to wear his bathers this time.
He slowly stripped off his jeans, shirt and shoes and went back to the edge of the river. He took a deep breath then stepped down into the water. He waded deeper, gritting his teeth at the temperature then dived underneath. He emerged with an explosive breath, cursing under his breath as he shivered. He realised he’d better get this over and done with and cast the Bubble-head Charm on himself before duck-diving under the water.
He spent the next fifteen minutes searching as much as he could under the water, checking for habitats that would appeal to Grindylows. He found plenty of signs that they’d once been there but no actual Grindylows. When he finally surfaced again he was both satisfied and worried. Satisfied that the river was capable of supporting the aquatic creatures but a bit worried that they hadn’t yet returned.
He swam as quickly as he could to the shore and pulled himself out. He’d drifted down a bit from where he’d gone in and he padded back towards his clothes, running a hand through his soaking hair as he contemplated his next move.
