Charlie was very glad he had taken up Mandy's offer to volunteer at the Animal Shelter. Coming in every few days and helping to take care of the poor unfortunate creatures made him feel like he was doing something useful, something real, something he was actually trained for. He knew he'd been a bit aimless about his life lately. Sometimes too many choices were worse than none at all. So it felt good to come in and take care of dogs and cats and crups and kneazles and other assorted pets that had been abandoned, abused or otherwise left behind. He'd always related to animals better than people, they never expected much and gave him unconditional love without asking for anything but more love in return.
He'd considered adopting more of his charges and taking them home but right now, the house was too small and he suspected Slibovitz would not take kindly to another occupant. Besides, he wasn't home enough to care for another pet, especially one who would need more attention and care. Perhaps at some point in the future, but not right now.
"So, how are you today, Bert?" He asked the new dog, taking him out of the kennel and checking his eyes, ears and tail. "Settling in alright, mate?"
The small dog just wheezed and wagged his tail at Charlie.
