Date: 8 June 2005 Characters: Roger Davies, Zacharias Smith Location: Lovegood Lane Status: Private Summary: A visit to Roger's workshop. Completion: Complete
Roger stood and moved to his desk, rooting through for a new pencil. He tended to hang onto them until they'd been worn down to the nub, and his current one, he thought as he peered at the stump in his hand, was past that point. He'd been working on some rough plans for a large and shiny desk, meant for Rita Skeeter's office at what would be the Daily Prophet offices.
He enjoyed taking the time on Friday afternoons to work on furniture plans. That way, even if the day or week had been stressful, he could end it with something he loved to do.
When he heard his name, he looked up and over to the entrance of the shop below. He grinned when he spotted Zach and lifted a hand.
"Up here," he called back, heading down the stairs to meet Zach, gesturing to the shop. "Welcome to my as-yet-unnamed shop. How've you been?"
Zach grinned and stepped forward to meet him, taking his hand in his. "I'm good, thanks." He looked around. "I like it. You've done well for yourself. I'm impressed."
He couldn't imagine running something like this. Hopefully that wasn't an entirely bad thing... but the responsibility, the stress. He wasn't sure he could handle something that big.
"Am I interrupting anything? If you're busy, I can stop by later?"
Roger smiled and shrugged at Zach's compliment. "I appreciate that, thanks," he said. "Feels good to build something, you know?"
"Nah, you aren't interrupting anything. You've caught me at that part of the day where I'm sort of winding down, so now's good. Pull up a work bench," he added, gesturing to a bench and low work table off to the side.
He sat across from Roger and wondered how he should start. "I've been thinking. And well, I spoke to Lupin today. I was actually... are you still looking for someone to help out around here? I figure you'll be working on the school, and aside from that, I can be of use other places. If I don't completely suck at it. In which case you're completely allowed to sack me." He smiled at the table, half afraid to look up.
Roger remembered their last conversation; Zach had said he'd pop in to the shop if things went alright with his meeting with Lupin. So when he'd looked up and seen Zach arrive, he'd figured that was a good sign but didn't want to assume or put too much faith into it. The truth was that Zach -- and Charlie, come to think of it, had sounded more earnest in a normal conversation than most of the blokes he'd spoken to in actual interviews. He was hoping things worked out.
When Zach brought up the offer he'd made, Roger grinned. "I'm definitely still looking for help." He rested his elbows on the table. "Yeah, truth is, in addition to helping with the school project, I've other jobs in progress and lined up. There's plenty of work to go around, believe me."
He shook his head. "And if you're worried about not knowing the ropes, don't," he said frankly. "Sounded last week like you'd know your way around a workshop, and the rest you'll pick it up as you go, like we all did here."
"Yeah?" Zach said, unable to keep the relief out of his voice. "That's... wonderful. I've been rattling around in my flat for the last two weeks going out of my mind."
He could not have expressed how bloody excited he was, or how nervous. This was a very good thing. "I learn fairly quickly, contrary to popular belief," he said with a self-depreciating smile. "And I like hard work. I'm not used to not doing anything. And this... well, it's actually something that means something." Grinning at Roger he nodded. "I can't thank you enough."
"Hah, well, I don't know anything about your learning ability, but you seem pretty sharp to me," he said with a laugh. "And if you like hard work, then that's the first step, because this is definitely that."
"You're welcome," he said, "and thank you -- hopefully this will work out for the both of us, yeah?" He smiled. "I can manage a pretty good wage for the work, and I think you'll like the people who work here; they're a good lot. What's your schedule like?"
"Sharp? Not sure about that, but I certainly try," he said, grinning from ear to ear.
He laughed when Roger asked about his schedule. "You're joking, right? Let's see... yesterday I got up at eight, and then I took a shower and I puttered around the flat for a while until I had bored myself to death, and then I went for a walk. Mmmm, pretty tight schedule, man. I'm not sure, looking at it, that I'll be able to work for you after all." He grinned again. "You tell me when you need me here and how long and I'll be here, how's that? I'm easy."
Roger frowned consideringly. "Sure you'll be able to find the time for us with all those other commitments?" he asked before he grinned. "No, seriously, I'm glad I could catch you before you got really busy with other things. And you'd have weekends off here, working during days, mainly, if you were full-time, though I've a bloke here who works part-time and leaves around early afternoon."
"For right now, and for the forseeable future I'd be very interested in full time. There's... well there's a job opening for a flying instructor once the school opens. But that's not a huge commitment. I'd just have to cut back. But that would be if it pans out." He smiled. "So when can I start. And if I'm coming off overly enthusiastic, you're more than welcome to slap me."
He stopped and thought for a minute. "Well, maybe not slap me. But definitely tell me in a very firm manner."
"Full time is good," he said with a smile. "And whenever you see your circumstances changing, just let me know in plenty of time, yeah? Other than that, I think we've got a deal." He held out a hand. "You could start on Monday, if that suits."
"Hah. No slapping, I promise. What kind of idiot boss would I be not to like a bit of enthusiasm, anyway? I mean, I've not been doing this long, but last I checked, that was a good thing." He laughed.
"I'll let you know. Definitely." Zach smiled at him. "Monday... oh wow. Seriously? That would be fantastic." It was all he could do not to stand up and hug the other man.
"No slapping is good. I can totally get on board with that." Zach was so fucking excited. "I can't... thank you. Thank you so much."
