"I believe I have," Julian considered, unoffended. He truly did appreciate all her assistance and support. He knew she was worried, but if she hadn't been there for him, there would have been more to worry her. "Georges seems content enough to stay with you. Well, not really as he's still upset that we're not taking him ( ... )

Whatever saucy retort he was going to give, Julian quickly forgot it. Somehow, he knew there was something dreadful, and dreadfully important, about that owl. He was on his feet and over to the window before he even realised he had moved. The owl was obviously a foreign breed. It settled upon the coffee table in front of Seti, helping itself to some cheese. From there, they both could see the name addressed on the front. It read: "To Mr. Alfred de Calais". 'Alfred' was a name that shared a common root with 'Avery'. In other words, it was a codename ( ... )

The tone managed to get his attention, but it didn't seem to cut through the panic. She laid the letter aside and reached up to stroke his cheek. "Julian," she repeated, more gently this time, "I'm not going to stop you from going. But first you must calm down and think this through. Rushing off to France with no thought given to the consequences will not help her. Please don't make me accuse you of turning into a Gryffindor." Humour was perhaps in the worst taste just now, but she would use every weapon available to break through to him, bring him back to his senses. It seemed to work, as he blinked slowly then pressed their foreheads together ( ... )

Changing a portus spell was easy enough, so long as you had some familiarity with your destination. Obviously, Julian knew Stoatshead quite well by now. As he worked on this, however, a thought occurred to him. The possibility was slim that Rochester would miraculously appear in the brief time Julian was gone, but stranger things had happened. It might do to alter the portkey he was leaving as well. The problem was that issue of familiarity. He didn't think he knew Calais well enough to form a reliable connection. The last thing he needed was to lose the man upon finding him. And there was no way of predicting Julian's course on his way back to England. Briefly, he was stymied by this dilemna, before suddenly remembering the trick he'd used to locate Gilderoy after that fall down the stairs. Only, he would link Rochester's portkey to his so the man would come to him. As long as Julian didn't lose his portkey - which, conveniently, was a bracelette he'd made so Gilderoy would have a wedding heirloom- he could be reached ( ... )

She didn't look very reassured, but it seemed she wouldn't object any further. Julian didn't want to upset her like this, and his tone softened a bit more. "I love you, Habibti. I will see you again. Soon. Take care of him in the meantime. Don't let him fret or overreact. Now, give me a kiss for luck ( ... )
