Cedric had walked out onto the veranda of their second-story room in the
Fotakis Hotel of Paleopoli Magika, the magical village outside Muggle Paleopolis. Below him spread the blue-blue Thracian Sea, the sweep of the Aegean between Thasos and Samothrace and the mainland of Thrace to the north. From the island, he could see it across the water, foggy and dim with distance.
The hotel was better than he'd expected -- if not overly ornate, certainly nice enough. They had a candle chandelier above a small table, a little desk for reading or writing equipped with quill and ink, a broom rack, lovely brass lamps by the beds, and a private bathroom with the shower attached to the tub. There were two beds, in fact, but it was the only room on the sea side that had been left even this relatively early in the season.
He could smell the sea, salty and sharp, and after the long trip here, he thought he'd like a minute just to stand there in the light breeze and listen to the water and the gulls and the sounds of Katie moving in the room behind him. He'd bought a bottle of wine downstairs, red Macedonian wine from Noussa that the barkeep had recommended with a grin and a wink and a nod in Katie's direction. "Sweet wine, sweet woman, sweet sea air and a little candlelight," he'd said in good, if heavily accented English. "There are glasses with the water pitcher in your room, ne?"
Turning his back on the sea, leaning into the wrought-iron railing, Cedric called back into the room, "Do you want wine now or later? Or a glass now and more later? We've still got several hours until sunset."
