"I must say that I tend to vary to extremes when it comes to protecting my mind. There are years when my thoughts were so tightly guarded I could barely access them, and others where there is naught. I will practice if it will make you feel at ease. Surely I can find a balance."

Sanguini smiled, baring his fangs.

"Shallow? Oh, you're horribly shallow, my dear, always taking time out of our walks to look in the mirror and make sure your hair is absolutely perfect and there isn't a stitch out of place."

He chuckled.

"And I know you have feelings, Narcissa. Being guarded is not the same as feeling nothing at all."

"I am unable to use any type of magic myself, so Occumency is closed to me in a sense, although there are other ways I can protect my mind. And while it is possible for someone to imitate you using a potion, they would have to be extremely skilled in mimicking your mannerisms. The little things stand out like flashing lights to me. Simply copying your appearance would not be enough to trick me."

Sanguini smiled when Narcissa laughed.

"I promise to keep the wicked truths I have discovered to myself." He smiled. "And I am not really concerned with convincing others. You cannot teach the blind to see, after all."

"I suppose that is true."

Sanguini chuckled when she said her next words.

"Everyone has unique mannerisms. It's not anything specific, really, simply a combination of how you walk and speak and move. I don't even really think about it unless I see a change of some sort. And if there wasn't any logical explanation for such a change, and I am quite skilled and telling if someone is lying, I could almost be sure if someone was imitating you."

The vampire's expression sobered a bit.

"I have been occupied with my thoughts as of late, mainly thinking of what Augustus spoke of. What little he said is enough to make me worry. I...would not be surprised if my sire turned up in Stoatshead relatively soon."

"You're not predictable. You're...you, and it is simply something I pay attention to enough to notice. If I am around someone enough, I simply begin noticing such...quirks."

Sanguini paused at her statement and then nodded.

"You are not weak, Narcissa, that I know, but neither is Josephine. I suppose I am worried about history repeating itself. We are not lovers, but we are close enough that she might assault you simply to wound me. She wouldn't kill me unless I attempted to permanently get rid of her, so she hurts those around me, those I am close to."

Sanguini stopped walking, tilting his head down. He looked at the ground rather than her face.

"I...I'm sorry. I just thought that if I was away from you, she wouldn't be able to find you. She can sense where all of her children are, but she wouldn't know where you live or who you are if we weren't together when she found me. Augustus doesn't know your last name or the fact that you live in Copper Towers. I thought going into solitude would make sure that she found me by myself."

Sanguini's jaw clenched in tension, his fangs biting into his lip.

"It was foolish, but it was the first solution that came to mind. I am still not sure what the proper answer is."

Sanguini glanced upwards when she touched his chin, his dark eyes locked on hers.

"Torture me, most likely. Not physically; she is rarely that crass, after all, but she does enjoy battering my psyche. Four hundred years has given her quite a bit of experience doing so, as I'm sure you can imagine. It is nothing that I have not gone through before, and I will not risk your life. She has no qualms about killing mortals."

Sanguini's fangs bit a little harder into his lip, although not enough to draw blood.

"Josephine is...fickle. She could do anything from simply insulting you to snapping your neck the instant she saw you."

The vampire let out a deep breath.

"And no, I doubt she is watching us. Josephine has no patience for such things and as she can sense all of her children, I can sense her."

Sanguini attempted to relax as her fingers brushed against his lips, a gentle touch.

"Yes, I do suppose that is true. I just do not want it to be my fault that you are injured or killed. She is a venomous creature."

His eyes briefly closed as she pressed a kiss to his cheek.

"I should have known she would find me someday, and that I would have someone close to me that she could hurt. Many times she simply hypnotized my companions somewhere else so we could be alone while she harassed me, but I am not sure what she will do now."

Sanguini frowned.

"I do not like to think of your passing, Narcissa, be it sooner or later."
