Rabastan had given up on finding sleep. It would not come. She would not come. And worst of all, he knew that there was little he could do about it. He would not place himself between her and her decisions. He could not fight through her defenses and would not try to sneak his way in. The only way to reach her as Cissy -- not the Black, not the Malfoy, not even the public Narcissa -- was to have her invite him inside the defensive walls she had erected. That her fortifications were nearly as old as she, as solid as she, as well designed as she, as clever as she, did not bother him. That he had wanted inside to get to know her since they were young and was continually denied entry, did. But even this was her decision and for him to not honor it would be beyond disrespectful.

Rabastan knew he was missing something, possibly many somethings, that would make this all clearer for him, but without Cissy's perspective, he couldn't make it out. He knew that she had her reasons for hiding herself from him, just as she had her reasons for choosing to remain married instead of separating herself from her husband, and her reasons were hers alone. He would listen if she would choose to share them, but he would never force them from her. Rabastan did not need reasons because he trusted that Cissy could make the right choices for herself. He was not a man to tell any woman otherwise, not that this one would even let him if he tried.

If there were two things that he was absolutely sure about Narcissa Black Malfoy these were her ability to think for herself and take care of herself. They were two of the many things that drew him to her like a moth to a flame. Rabastan knew that strong women were his weakness. They always had been, even from the time of his very first crush on his Transfiguration Professor. But his feelings for Cissy went beyond simple attraction. He had always been attracted to her, that was nothing new, what was new was the way his magic reacted to her and pulled him to her. Rabastan had never experienced anything like it.

He knew he wanted to connect with her, connect in every possible way. It was even stronger now than it had been in his youth. He was beginning to understand just how much. It was why he had removed anything he had that could be seen as a barrier to her. His sanctuary was completely open to her, as was his mind, heart and magic. All he could do now was wait. Wait, because he would honor her decisions.
