Ron was downstairs in the cellar at Bookworm, operating the press. Lee was taking a late lunch break, so Ron was there by himself. As he took some finished pages off the press, he heard a familiar voice call him.

"Oi, over here," he said, raising his voice and a hand. It sounded like Cedric.

"Hey," Cedric said, wandering over, hands in pockets. He grinned. "I just thought I'd stop by when I was free and see you run this contraption. Color me curious."

Cedric was looking much better than he had even a few days ago. "You all better now? Got Towler's seal of approval and so forth?" Ron grinned back, moving around the press to examine the next pages he had to typeset and print. He wiped his sweaty forehead with the back of his hand then realised he'd probably just wiped ink across his face.

"Buggering fuck!" he swore, pulling trays of letters from drawers under the printing press and setting them down on a table nearby. "Sorry, mate," he said sheepishly. "Mum and Bill are coming for dinner at six, and I'm trying to get as much done as I can by half-four so I can leave early. But it's okay, I'm glad to see you."

"Not a problem. I won't get in your way." Cedric pulled his wand and aimed it at Ron's face. "Hold still." With a muttered spell, he got rid of the ink.

"And yeah, I guess I've got Towler's seal of approval, or at least I'm allowed to go back to work tomorrow, just supposed to take it easy for a bit. Jeff's not even letting me pick up a brush for the painting day Saturday."

Putting away his wand, he gestured to the press. "So how does that work, anyway?"

This was getting worse and worse. Ron seemed to know exactly how to zero in on Cedric's insecurities and what he'd avoided thinking about.

What did her body tell him? He had no idea. He wasn't sure if the same measures applied. He'd rushed her at the museum; he'd felt that. She'd seemed to like the kiss or at least not be adverse to it, but then he'd gone too fast, driven by desire, and she'd pulled back. He didn't want to rush her, but the more he thought about it, the more he realized he was the instigator. He kissed her, he pursued her, he watched her arse, her mouth. Her gestures to him seemed affectionate, but friendly. He didn't mind being assertive, but he needed it to be a conversation. He wanted to be kissed back. He wanted to be wanted. She seemed open to his touch, even to enjoy it, but she didn't ... respond, not in the way he was used to, not in the way he responded to her. He felt no heat. Was that because it all confused her, being new, or because she wasn't feeling it ( ... )

Ron watched Cedric's body language. He might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but Ron had always had a feel for people's body language. He'd never have snogged Lavender in the common room, in front of people, if she'd not looked like she wanted him to. He knew Hermione was a special case, of course; while she was openly passionate about causes and ideas, it was often harder to figure what she was feeling toward people. Cedric looked especially tense as he made a fist then opened it then made it again. Ron felt bad that the whole situation was making Ced this tense ( ... )

"It's different," Cedric acknowledged, although how much he wasn't sure.

Ron's comment: You care about her a lot. You fancy her a lot. I reckon you should ask yourself if she seems to care about you as much and in the same way, made Cedric look up again. It wasn't the same. He knew it wasn't the same. But she'd acknowledged as much when she'd agreed to go out with him. She just hadn't been sure if it would change.

"No, I don't think she does have any idea, but then, I'm not sure I do, either." His grin was wry, and he shook his head. "I don't think there's a quick and easy answer for it. This is just something that we ... have to see where it goes."

He stood up. "Go ahead with your work. I'll just watch for a while."
