Retcon blanched when he heard the name 'Hermione Granger,' and Horace remembered the stories of her dislike of house-elf 'slavery.'
"Don't worry," said Horace, "I won't let any harm come to you."
"But she might give Retcon... clothes."
"Well, what if she does? Just sign up to work for me again."
"Retcon thinks clothes is bad luck. Can't work after has clothes."
"I'll keep a sharp eye on her, if she starts doing anything that looks dodgy I'll stupefy her."
Retcon didn't seem to be convinced, and Horace eventually said "Just make yourself scarce while she's here, if you're not around she may not even realise I have house elves. Better tell Stammy to keep his head down too, him and his children, if you're that worried."
"Retcon thanks the Professor."
"Make sure that you make a good supply of sandwiches - wouldn't want anyone going hungry. Remember that young Longbottom should be here too, so plenty of everything. Put them in the preserver cupboard. And leave out the tea and coffee, just in case they don't want sherry."
"Will make everything ready."
"Excellent. Well then, I'll get back to my work, you disappear when you hear them coming, I'll give you a shout once they've gone."
Horace went back to his study and the catalogue he was reading. Could the granite counter tops he wanted for his laboratory really be that expensive..?
