Katie awoke with a start, jacknifing into a sitting position. Fumbling around in the covers, gasping for breath, her arm hit something solid for once.

That brought her back to the present faster than anything else could. Normally her mind didn’t quite realize she was in the bedroom of her flat until at least a few moments after waking. It tended to feel like she was still in the nightmare for at least a few moments, until she could get herself fully conscious enough to logically assess her surroundings. But, accidentally hitting the body beside her anchored her mind in the present quickly, even if her body had yet to catch up.

The moonlight shone in her bedroom window, casting the only illumination in the room across George’s broad back. Mouth slightly open, snoring very softly, he looked completely at home in her bed. His arm was stretched out towards her, although she had rolled away after he had gone to sleep. Part by design, part by instinct as she was used to sleeping entirely on her own.

Biting her lip, she fisted her hands in the sheets as she tried to even out her breathing, her heart seemingly beating loud enough to wake the dead. She didn’t think she had woken him up - although he stirred slightly, the pace of his breathing didn’t change, and his eyes never opened. For her, this wasn’t a novel experience, waking up in the middle of the night, even if she had hoped this night would be different.

Every night George and she had spent together since the first, although seemingly few and far between, had ended alone. Weekday nights were the easiest to fob off without seeming like a heartless bitch; work to do in the morning, some task she had to do before bed - she had the excuses down pat. It wasn’t like she was making a big deal of it, but it was easiest to be alone in her own bed. Even if she didn’t wake up every single night, although it was close, it was never a simple matter of her eyes just snapping open. Beyond waking him up, and the inevitable questions, it also left her the opportunity to go into the cinema afterwards.

But this night had been different, and there was no way to send him home. They had spent the night at her flat, curled up on the couch, watching one of her movies on the telly. It had been relaxing, and nice, and when they went to bed together she had no way to kick him out after, although she hadn’t really wanted to. They were in her flat, in her bed, with her alarm clock on the bedside stand - even with nothing to get up for the next day. She had decided ahead of time to take at least most of the day off, and with plans to have breakfast with him the next day, there was no excuse for him not to spend the night for the first time.

As nice as it had been, this was what she had been worried would happen. Although it at least seemed she hadn’t woken him up.

Still shaking slightly, Katie grabbed her wand from the bedside table, the top and boxers she had tossed on before sleep damp with sweat. Casting one last assessing glance at George, she slipped carefully from the bed, grabbing a spare top she had tossed over the chair in the room, and headed towards the washroom.

Clicking the door shut quietly behind her, she yanked off her sleepwear, tossing it over the sink as she pulled the fresh shirt on. She didn’t think George would notice, he had been half asleep when she realized she didn’t really feel like sleeping in the nude. Taking a deep breath, she grabbed the pyjamas from the sink and placed them in the hamper beneath a few of the dirty towels she had in there. Leaning over the sink, she let the water run gently, splashing the requisite cold water on her face.

Tying her hair back securely in a ponytail, she contemplated her reflection for a moment. In reality she knew she looked fine, but it was easy to imagine the bags under eyes she saw there were visible to everyone. Shaking her head in disgust she turned off the tap, and prepared to head back to the bedroom. Sleep would be elusive, but it wasn’t as if she could just leave George here.
