Harry had not brought many possessions with him to Stoatshead Hill, but he knew somewhere in his room was hidden something of great value. It was one of the few things he'd taken with him from India, though he hadn't thought of it since moving here. Now, though, it seemed like a good time to find it. He might be a Gryffindor, but sometimes even Gryffindors needed to find their courage from an outside source. It only took a bit of rummaging to uncover what he was looking for.
Harry had purchased
the bracelet from a Tibetan trader they'd passed in the street. He didn't know what had made him stop, but the little sandalwood statues of Ganesha and water buffalo bone prayer wheels had intrigued him. He found himself touching a small, beaded bracelet in fascination, and the trader had explained in broken English what it was. Mala beads were used by Buddhists to help keep track of the number of repetitions of mantras they had uttered. It sort of reminded Harry of rosaries he'd seen as a boy, though as he'd not grown up in a religious household he'd never understood their significance much.
Still, these mala beads were special. Each bead was actually a seed for a bodhi tree. The trader translated "Bodhi" as "wisdom", and told him how the Buddha had sat under a bodhi tree and gained enlightenment. Now, as he held the beads, perfect because of their imperfections, he felt calm. It was as though putting the bracelet on quieted the worries in his mind and gave him the confidence he needed to step outside the house and go see Hermione. The largest bead, a beautiful Gryffindor red, rested against his pulse, the dark brown bodhi seeds encircling his wrist. With a deep breath, Harry exited the house and went next door to Bookworm.
"Hello?" he called, pushing the door open. "Hermione?"
