Date: 28 January 2005 Characters: Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger Location: 35 Alpha Lane Status: Private Summary: Ron goes to find Hermione and make up with her. Completion: Complete
After a very enjoyable, though non-productive, Saturday, there was an inclination to spend Sunday just being very lazy. Hermione had slept over three hours again, which meant that she was slowly getting better in that regard. If she could make it four hours total a night, she would be content. That wouldn't be much less than she'd ever slept, after all, so it was a good goal

Ron watched as Hermione scratched behind the cat's ears. Apparently the creaking door didn't bother her enough to make her get up and check who was there. He would have to do more to get her attention. He pushed the door open with one hand, then cast a hover charm on his peace offering, making it float into the room until it approached Hermione's desk. When she finally looked up and saw it, Ron took a small step into the office.
Crookshanks reached her and immediately went for her hand, rubbing against her until she was scratching behind his ears. She put down her quill and looked through her calendar to provide a few possible dates for a meeting. A trip to Berlin would require a portkey, that was mentioned in the owl as being supplied by Schmidt's company. Maybe she could ask Roger to go with her, since he didn't seem to mind taking the time if he wasn't too busy. If not, she could always attempt to get Harry out of his room. She sighed and made a face at that thought.
She looked down at Crookshanks and smiled before she went back to her notes. A movement from the side caught her attention, and she glanced up in time to see a large bouquet of flowers floating towards her. She frowned and turned towards the door, blinking when she saw Ron standing there.
"Hi," she said just as quietly, looking from him to the flowers and back before she arched a brow.
Ron couldn't tell which surprised Hermione more, the flowers or him standing in the room, speaking to her. He couldn't back out now; he had to keep going, no matter how hard this was for him to do.
"I, um, hope you like carnations," he said, glancing from her face to the floating bouqet. "It's hard to find fresh flowers in January, even in a wizarding village." He'd paid several more Muggle pounds than he could afford for that bouquet; he would have to cut back somewhere until he got his next pay cheque. After two weeks mostly on his own, he was beginning to get a glimmer of understanding about some of the things Hermione always worried about.
He took three small steps into the room, hoping she would ask him to come closer.
"How am I supposed to know what I mean to you?" she asked quietly. "Harry's changed so much that I don't even recognize him anymore. I don't even know if he knows who he is now that his life's mission is over. You're moving on and certainly don't need me nagging you to do laundry or wash dishes. I've always been needed so I've had a place, somewhere to belong, and now it's all over."
She sighed. "Maybe it's my fault for doing everything because then I was needed again, to help make things run smoothly and to take care of you both. I just don't know how to not be needed, I guess, and I know we're friends but I have no idea how to be friends if you don't need me. God, I don't make sense, but it's difficult to go from being the one keeping you both going for so long to just being forgotten

"Well, I just told you what you mean to me," he said, trying not to sniffle. "I probably should've told you sooner, but we were sort of busy. I hardly know Harry anymore myself. And I'm not...I'm not moving on. I'm finally just starting to live now. Merlin knows I probably wouldn't do any chores if somebody didn't nag me. I'm a lazy sod, and so is Harry. That's nothing new." He couldn't help the small smile that crept onto his face.
"I didn't know you felt like I'd forgotten you," he said quickly. "And I still need you, even if you're not taking care of me like you used to. I need you to be the smart one, the one who figures things out. I need you to keep me from being an arsehole to people. I just...I didn't just need you to take care of me." He didn't know how else to explain it without saying something like I don't know how to be me without you, but that was just plain sappy, so he didn't

She sighed. "I'm more than just the smart one, though," she said softly. "And I can't always be there to stop you from being an arse to people or I'd never have time for anything else. I know it's difficult for me to stop taking care of you and nagging, but I'm trying. I know things have changed, I knew before but didn't realize just how much."
"I've made friends, a couple of really good ones," she said, thinking about Roger and Cedric, "but they're not you and Harry. Without you two, nothing ever really feels right. It's like a piece of life is missing, and the last two weeks, it's been like two are gone. I doubt that makes sense, but it's how things feel."
She laughed softly and hugged him tighter. "Well, more often than not maybe?" she said. "I could just be used to it now, though."
"I don't know if I can move back yet," she admitted quietly. "I can't if nothing will change. I realized that I've been doing too much and not letting you both grow up. I just don't know what to do."
"If you're not used to me being an arse sometimes by now, well, dunno if you'll ever get used to it," he teased, returning her hug just as tightly, then pulling back and brushing a strand of hair off her face.
"Well...I'm not going to beg you to move back," he said, examining her face. "I know that won't make you come back if you don't want to. Though it feels all wrong without you there. You might be surprised, though, if you stopped by the house. It's not as tidy as you'd make it, but I'm trying. Really. Ask Viktor. He caught me washing dishes the other night."
He smiled, backing away a bit and muttering Finite incantatem; the bouquet fell into his hands and he gave it to Hermione. "For you. A peace offering. Like I said. Though maybe we should put these in some water; my Everfresh Charms aren't all that good."
