"Aah, well, that's perfectly understandable. Ministry sure sounds like a big and important name. I'm sure there are a lot of people there who are working to restore the Wizarding world. Lots of... lots of people."
Gilderoy pressed his lips together and nodded his head slightly, glancing off into the far corner of the room.
"Miss Morgana Mortenstern," the mediwitch called out.
"Aah! Did I tell you about my fiancee, or why I'm here? Well, you see, it was a particularly uneventful day at the shop. I had just taken in a rather meager order, and collected on another custom tailoring design - A set of wizarding robes of navy blue wool with copper trim and a bronze inner lining of crepe satin with embroidered vine along the lower hem and cuffs. Anyway, I was just preparing to send out another owl to a feed supplier - not really know just who to send it to last time really made the previous owl a bit confused in regards to where it should go.
"But I digress... I had been writing the note when Miss Rita Skeeter - she's a friend of mine, you know. Lovely hair, amazing fashion sense. She simply adored the ensemble I made for her - but then again, who wouldn't? She brought with her a book that held the accounts and notes from my mother. Well, I can tell you that took me quite by surprise. Having not a single memory about her but one, and she being deceased and having left me alone. You can imagine how any contact with her would have touched me. And it did. Unfortunately, I had some scissors in my hand. Scissors that were charmed to stay as sharp as possible. And when I fell, I found them buried deep into my side. My elf, Knobby tried to help me, but she rather panicked at the sight of all that blood. My internal organs were damaged, and there was so much blood, one would have thought my cellar had been used as a torture chamber, or slaughterhouse."
Gilderoy paused to check Sulie's expression. He didn't want to go on if this was too upsetting to her. "Miss Rita brought me here, and just in time, I might add. Why, if she were just a little later, I might not have survived. As it was, part of my organs had to be regrown, and I was in hospital for three days, laid up for another week. Now, I'm just back so they can check for other damage and tell me that everything's alright."
"And, of course it will be. No doubt about that. Why, I feel absolutely fantastic."
Su was relieved that Gilderoy didn't mind her equivocal answer. Something about him had seemed a bit off during the entire conversation, and she honestly hadn't known how he would react.
"I appreciate your understanding, and I'll get back to you about the job in a few days."
When Gilderoy started in on his soliloquy (there was really no other word for it), Su felt a bit shell-shocked. Goodness, the man certainly could talk. His accident was unfortunate, of course, but as she didn't enjoy the thought of blood, Su found herself getting a tad bit queasy as his description of scissors in his side. Ew.
"I'm glad to hear you're feeling better, Mr. Lockhart. That sounds like a terrible accident." Su swallowed; time to change the subject. "So your fiancee is Rita Skeeter, then? I remember her from the Tournament. She certainly did have a certain flair." For blood, Su remembered. That woman had made life rather nasty for a few of her classmates.
Su heard voices at the receptionist's desk, and looked up. Was that...Luna Lovegood? Luna came over to speak to Su. "It's been lovely chatting with you, Mr. Lockhart. Time to get my ankle taken care of, I suppose. I'll be in touch about the job offer, and thank you again."
Apparently that charm affected more than Gilderoy's brain, although Su remembered pondering such things with her housemates long ago. No straight man should be that shiny. Su smiled to herself.
