Parvati was not quite ready to face her empty flat after her troubled night. Besides, she had promised herself that she would get out and start living life instead of moping around alone. Leaving the hospital, she marched determinedly to the Five Alarm. The moment she opened the door, the warmth and noise of the place made her feel she'd done the right thing. She stepped up to the bar, intending to eat there, but did a quick survey of the patrons while waiting for the waitress to notice her.
Lavender was sitting alone at a table. Parvati approached her, beaming.

Lavender sipped her wine slowly as she waited for her soup. Tomorrow she would be on duty as a mediwitch, the remembered. Sometimes it could get a little confusing switching between her roles as student midwife and qualified mediwitch, but she thought she was doing quite a good job so far. At least, she hadn't started going crazy or making stupid mistakes.

Looking up, she grinned when she saw who was approaching her table. "Parvati!" She stood up, moving to give Parvati a quick hug. "Do you want to join me? I've just ordered myself some food."

Perfect, Parvati thought. This is just what I needed. She did, however, have to stifle an embarrassed giggle when Lavender hugged her, remembering that she had briefly contemplated snogging her only the night before.

"I'd love to!" she replied. "I couldn't stand another night alone in that flat."

She sat down, trying to catch the waitress' eye.

"Oh, I know the feeling," Lavender agreed, nodding. "I get so bored and lonely by myself all the time." She giggled. "I should get a pet, but I don't want to end up like some crazy spinster living by herself with half a dozen cats!"

Lavender smiled. "How've you been? Did you have a good New Year?"

"The host?" Parvati asked. "But I thought...isn't Terry Boot a bloke?" Of course he's a man, she thought. He's one of your sister's best friends.

Lavender's response was delayed by the waitress.

"Yes," Parvati said. "I'll have what you're having. Except, I think I'll have some ale instead of wine."

Lavender nodded. "Yes. Definitely male and rather smitten by Blaise. I spoke to him." She frowned, thinking back. "A little bit clueless, too. At least, he didn't know anything about me and Blaise." Lavender raked her hand through her hair and then smoothed down her fringe. "Blaise is no good for me," she said decisively. She'd been telling herself that since New Year's Eve, although she had yet to tell Blaise that.

She stirred her soup slowly. "That should be my New Year's resolution," she said with a wry smile. "I will not sleep with Blaise Zabini."

"Goodness," Parvati said. How awkward that must have been, she thought. She didn't know what else to say.

"Well," she said. "That sounds like the perfect New Years resolution. Sort of the polar opposite of mine, though. I've decided that by the end of the year I'll stop avoiding men."

Giggling, Lavender nodded. "I hope it's as easy to keep as it sounds. Your resolution sounds perfect, too." She smiled softly. "Baby steps, Parvati," Lavender told her quietly. "You don't have to rush anything." She shrugged. "Maybe taking things slow is the better idea. I seem to be having a little trouble in that respect."

She shook her head and took a sip of her wine, flushing slightly when she spotted Hermione Granger out of the corner of her eye.

Parvati smiled. "Ah, baby steps. You see, I had planned on going off and jumping on the next man I met, but I suppose your suggestion sounds much more practical."

She laughed but lowered her voice, reaching out for Lavender's hand.
"I've always admired your lack of hesitation. When you want something, you go for it, with very little fear. I always did too much thinking and worrying over consequences, which meant that I had a lot less fun, even before I got so mucked up. So, yes, I think that taking things slower is probably a good idea, but try not to feel bad about this. At least you had a good time while it was happening, right?"

"I suppose that's one option," Lavender teased. "Get it over and done with." She winked playfully.

Lavender gave Parvati's hand a squeeze. "Thanks. But... I think I tend to worry about things after I do them." She nodded. "Yeah, I had a good time. He kind of reminded me how enjoyable the physical stuff can be. And... well." Biting her lip, Lavender pulled her hand back from Parvati's and she took a spoonful of soup before speaking again. "Blaise isn't the only one who slept with someone else."

Parvati was her best friend and she felt as though she needed to tell her this. "You know I mentioned Ron...?"

Lavender's almost admission was clear enough for Parvati to understand.

"You're joking!" she exclaimed. "Ron, too? I..."

She was momentarily distracted as she noticed Hermione chatting with a dark haired man. Yet another reason to be embarrassed about her thoughts of the night before. She blushed and looked back at Lavender.

"Well...er...how was it?" was all she could come up with.

Lavender frowned, a little annoyed. "No, I'm not joking. And, yes, 'Ron, too'." She busied herself with her soup for a moment, not sure whether to take Parvati's reaction as a good thing or not.

"It was... Ron," she finished finally. "Which is good," she added quickly. "It was Ron and that was what made it good. Among other things." Lavender smiled impishly. "I certainly wasn't left wanting." Breaking the bread roll that had come with her soup in half, Lavender dunked it into the hot liquid.

'It was...Ron.' Parvati thought she understood. "A little awkward and very sweet, perhaps?" she said.

"Well, after all those months at school when I got to hear you imagining what it would be like with him, I'm glad he didn't dissapoint you. Is he freckled everywhere?" She couldn't help teasing Lavender a little.

"Something like that," Lavender agreed, thinking that Parvati had managed to capture it quite nicely. She bit back a giggle as she wondered if Ron's love-making was like his Quidditch skills and he got better with confidence. That would be something she was very interesting in find out.

Her face flooded with colour. Parvati was right and Lavender remembered the days when she'd hoped that Ron would be her first with mixed emotions. She pursed her lips. "I'm not answering that," she replied, sounding a little more prim than she'd intended. "Well. Maybe." She grinned, embarrassed. "Do you really want to know about just how freckled Ron Weasley is?"

"I would have given it to you at work, but it's a bit naughty, actually," Parvati said, giggling.

"Maybe I'll bring it round your flat before I go to sleep tonight."

Lavender gave Parvati a bemused look. A bit naughty? "Okay," she said slowly, not at all sure what it could be and wondering if it could be any naughtier than the underwear Blaise had given her for Christmas. "That sounds good. I really want to find out what it is now that you've said that!"

She dunked another piece of bread into her soup.

"I'll do that," she said, draining her ale, wondering how she had ever had the nerve to buy such a thing, let alone give it as a gift. She was fairly certain that Lavender would get a kick out of it, anyway.

She decided to change the subject. "So, you and Ron..is this getting serious now?"

"It's not," Lavender said with a slight wrinkle of her nose. "I mean, we said we wanted it to be casual, and maybe that's the right idea for us, you know? When we were together at school it was all just so... hot and heavy."

She finished her soup. "Now I can actually talk to him properly and... I like that. It probably wouldn't be good for either of us to go straight into anything serious."
