As much as he hated to admit it, Ollivander was really looking forward to this game. He hadn’t seen some of these people in many many years, and with such a restricted social life, it would be nice to get with other older witches and wizards for a friendly card game.

Of course, a few of his wands had been screaming at him all afternoon about the possible friction between the players, but he was quick to point out that cards and hot toddys do have a tendency of smoothing things over.

After his lunch was finished, Ollivander cleared up the kitchen, and set up the only table he owned in his parlour. It hadn’t been used since Julian helped fix it up in payment for his wand, and this would be the first time he used the new fireplace. He pulled out a nice tablecloth, and set up the sideboard with stuffed mushrooms, fruit slices, fish paste sandwiches, and a few bottles of claret, whiskey, soda, and gin. He would also be serving the hot toddy later.

“It really is a shame I don’t have a gramophone. I think a piano concerto would go quite well with a game like this,” he said, surveying his work.

With his guests arriving shortly, Ollivander brought the cards out of his desk and set them on the table. As the host, he would take the position as alternate, playing impartially through the round if anyone needed to get up for any reason. He could also refill glasses, and chat with them as they played, watching over the game as he did so.

Given his special position in life, this role in a game came more naturally for him than playing partners in any other situation.

Everything was in place, and since there were still another twenty minutes before his guests were scheduled to arrive, Ollivander went over to read his copy of the untranslated Beowulf manuscript until they arrived.
