Mafalda grimaced at the muck on the heel of her boot. She really ought to have looked where she was going better, but she was, she admitted to herself, a little bit nervous. Which was novel; she'd been, in the past year and however many weeks it was now: annoyed, bothered, irritated, frightened, overworked, overwhelmed, cranky, busy, and occasionally horny, but she hadn't actually been nervous, not in Peru, or Moldavia, or wherever the hell that frustrating little cock-up with the leather trader had been.
She banished the slimy muck and stepped onto firmer ground, then straightened her shoulders. Well, nerves be damned, she was the Minister, and she would certainly not behave like a cowering child before Gawain Robards.
She approached the door, shaking stray drops of rain off her sleeves, and rapped once, then rolled her eyes at herself and turned the handle. Honestly; it was a place of business, not someone's home. She could certainly let herself in the front door. Knocking was for individual offices. "Robards?" she said as she pushed it open. "It's me. Mafalda."
