Viktor was surprised by the knock at the door just he was cutting up an apple for Maire. He wasn't particularly expecting anyone, though of course, it was possible it could be someone responding to his posting for legal advice.

He started toward the door, admonishing her to remain in the kitchen, then frowned when he realized someone was peering into a window. His wand came to his hand as he hurried to the door, ready to defend his home. He turned the handle and yanked the door open quickly. "Hello. You are look in window, yet I am not know you. Say what you are want."

Just then he noticed the girl was covered with wet flour and holding ...something that might have been a cake. He lowered his wand slightly, but remained alert. "I am not get new visiting," he added, by way of explanation, deciding that if she were harmless, she woudl understand, and if she were harmful, she also would and it would serve him well to remain on guard.

"Da? Who's come?"

"Maire. I am telling you of stay--"

"Ooh! Is it cakes for me?"

Viktor sighed and switched his wand to his other hand, further from Maire. He wasn't willing to stop defending his home, but he also didn't especially want to frighten her.

Luna looked up at the wand being aimed at her and huffed. No wonder he didn't get many new visitors if this was how he answered the door to them.

"I wasn't looking into anything. I was merely glancing at my reflection in the window to make sure that my, uh, makeup was still on."

Yes, playing this muck off as a fashion statement was much less embarrassing than being a forgetful mess. Luna smiled back up at the man and spread more of the flour over her cheeks. "White is the new pink you know."

"Now, I know I am coming over rather unexpectadly, but I think it would be very silly to send an owl just across the street, only to introduce myself. Did you know that more owls are injured flying within a one kilometer distance from there home than thirty?"

"And as for the cake," she looked down at the girl. "It's for both of you. Now," she said, placing the cake on the ground and extending her hand. "I'm Luna Lovegood, this man is Viktor Krum and you must be his offspring."

Viktor lowered his wand slowly. He didn't think she was a threat, and really, he wasn't usually paranoid; he was solid at defense of self and others, and he was also quite quick, old and retired or not. "I am make apology. I am new, with have someone to watch for, and I am have ...week of new difficult thing? I am not know how English are say. And I am agree. Owl would be quite boring with very tiny flying."

Maire frowned at the lady. "I'm no offspring! I'm Maire."

Viktor chuckled. "You are Lovegood, which is being street. You must be of family that is of here. This is Maire, who is daughter."

He looked down at the cake. "Maire, perhaps we are take cake in kitchen?" She picked it up and he surreptitiously performed a stability charm on the plate. "Please have carry with careful, so it is not drop."

Luna watched as he studied her. He lowered his wand so she assumed he approved. It wasn't until they started walking inside that she was ashamed to realize she had lowered her hand to her own wand.

"No need for an apology. I guess you can never be to careful, especially with the recent break-ins. And yes, I am Luna of the street and family of Lovegood," she smiled, proud of her family's name and mark upon the town.

She looked down at Maire and raised her eyebrows. "I'm very honoured to meet you. And I think you can be Maire and offspring."

Luna had little to no experience interacting with children and she hoped she was making a decent impression. She looked now at the child and realized that she had to be at least 4. And Viktor was new to this?

"Did you have a nanny before you moved to Stoatshead?"

"луна," Viktor said. "Is not this word in English, but, is like?" He pointed up. "Is moon? In Bulgarian." He grinned. "I am not hear this many of word which feeling ...like this thing I am know for often. There is word for this." He scowled at the word that was not coming to him, then shook his head and gestured for her to come with him, following Maire and the cake to the kitchen.

"No, I am not have nanny. She is have mother, which is not live at me. Is ...this word is complication? Only, this is wrong piece of word. Compli-something. She is have marry, and her new husband is Muggle. I am speak at him last week. It is not go very good. I am keep her until I am. Until. Is ...complicating? Still not right."

"C'n I have a bit?" Maire interrupted.

"Did you have apple all until gone?"

She nodded vigorously. "Then you, you are have small bit. Is with tea."

She tried to follow where his thoughts were going but got lost when he started going on about what he was known for. "Yes, Luna means 'The Moon'. As for the rest of it, I don't really know what you're known for, besides Quidditch."

So he was a single father. Well she knew all about that, from the opposite end of course, but maybe she could help this family out. Judgeing from the furnishings, Viktor didn't have a clue how to raise a daughter.

"Complicated?" Luna offered. "Yes, I imagine having to share a child would be quite complicated. Did you quarrel?" She watched nervously as Maire took a piece of cake. "Make sure you have something within quick reach to wash that down, dear."

"Yes! Complicated. Quarrel is have different idea, loudly? Like argue? Yes, we are quarrel, but not always. Only with new problem. But I am not want to explain all complicatings with.." he nodded toward Maire, who had so far demonstrated that like all children, she was adept at overhearing things she probably ought not. "So. Now, Maire is stay at me until we are find agreeing."

Viktor turned on the heat under the kettle with a twitch of his wand, and opened the cold cupboard to get out milk. "How are you drink tea?" he asked Luna. Not that he was having tea; he was having coffee. However, as far as he could tell, here, it was tea. Always tea. So, he offered. "I am think, it is right for tea, with cake." He got leaves organized while Maire fetched a fork and climbed up on the chair she had adopted as her own, then got out ground coffee for himself. "Then, we are have correct England meal, yes?"

The water heated quickly, largely due to a charm that was working on the kettle in addition to the Muggle heat--he wanted his coffee quickly, in the mornings--and he poured into both containers, then sat at the table as well. "I am not mean, why you are know me. This is silly. I am only Quidditch player, which is using for fun but is not important job. Now, I am retiring and not that, also. I am mean, there is word for a time with a feeling, this feeling is like home feeling. You have name which is this feeling, at me." He shrugged. "I am need a book to get more words, but I am more learn, without."

Luna understood completley and tried her best to wink at Viktor, which ended up coming out as just one big and obvious blink. When he turned his back, she gave the same wink back at Maire.

"I'll take three lumps of sugar and a dab of chocolate if you have it, please and thanks. May I?" Luna gestured towards the drawers and searched for a knife. She went back to the table and began to cut the cake. "If you're looking for books I have plenty of reading material at my place. Or you might think about stopping by Hermione and Ron's new shop. Have you talked with her since they returned?"

Luna blinked at him, and Viktor looked at her for a moment, wonder whether she had something in her eye. However, she seemed all right, so he went about his business.

Chocolate in tea? Viktor thought it was just as well his back was turned. Well, he didn't have any chocolate, so he just put sugar in Luna's tea, and also sugar and milk in Maire's, then took all three cups to the table. "Maire, remember even have milk, tea is hot." He set it in front of her. "I am always like hot drink, even when I am small, but not so hot for burn tongue and get bad feeling with." He set Luna's tea across from him, in front of her, and sipped his coffee.

"Yes, I have speak at Hermione and her friend. She is..." he paused. "Much like I have wand before I am see, only she is more. Is not unreason. She is have long time of difficult ...time." He stuck his fork into his cake and took a bite, swallowing hard and washing it down with coffee. "So. You are come for bring cake?" he asked. "Or are we having other talk?" He frowned, hoping she didn't infer some sort of proposition there. "I am mean, this town is have trade, one help for other help. I am think, perhaps you are have that?"

Luna nodded in agreement. "Burnt tongue's are just awful. They feel fuzzy for ages afterwards."

She wrinkled her nose at the bitter aroma coming from Viktor's drink as he set down the cups. "I've always favoured cold drinks, something I could take down fast if I had to." She stirred her tea and took a sip. "Hmm... you have different tea than I have back home. It's good."

She sighed, played with the cake with her fork. "I haven't been by to see any of them yet," and Luna had to think long and hard as to why this was.

She was a little dissapointed that he had made the effort and tried a piece of her cake. Now she felt she obliged to try her own baking. She cut off a small, yet incredibly dense, piece and dunked it into her tea before eating it. Even with a gulp of tea after, she could feel the mass move down her throat and settle uncomfortably in her stomach. Shuddering slightly and taking another swig of tea, Luna continued. "Well Mr. Krum, I came for cake and conversation. I noticed you haven't had many visitors, and I thought maybe you could use the company. And we're each others closest neighbors, so I thought maybe we could make some agreements between the two, well three of us. And I don't mean by trade. But let's say, for example, you are having a burnt tongue episode or any other sort of injury. You and Maire are welcome to come over any time for help. Or if I'm not home you can make your way to the hospital where I work. I just want you to feel welcomed and comfortable. I know what it's like to not have many friends," she smiled.

Maire took another bite of her cake, then scowled and stabbed it with her fork.

"Perhaps you are be not hungry," Viktor suggested before she had a chance to expound on the (somewhat alarmingly reminiscent of potatoes and squid) flavor of the thick dessert. "You are just have apple. I think you are go see what is to play?"

She nodded and drank her tea, then escaped to her room.

"Yes," Viktor said, picking up the thread of the conversation. "We are not have, though it is seem, people are nice for mostly. I am hope, we are not need hospital, though. I have healthy, from athlete, and she have small body with not much for hurt."

He pushed his own plate away after gamely taking a few more bites, and finished his coffee. "Is it very busy, with hospital?" He was somewhat at a loss as to what they should talk about, but if she had come for conversation, he was willing to try.
