After sending off her letter of inquiry to Zabini, Hermione saw that it was time to visit Professor McGonagall. Ron had told her that Bill would be visiting later in the afternoon and was looking forward to the reunion with his older brother, but she could hear him snoring when she left her room. She noticed that Harry's door was shut and everything was quiet. Possibly too quiet. She worried about him, but knew from experience that any interference or pushing would just make it worse. No, she'd give him space and be there when he was ready. Until then, she'd just worry quietly ( ... )

"Come in dear," Minerva smiled, seeing the relaxed look on Hermione's face. Just within a week she could see a glow of health on the girl that hadn't been there before. She must had walked there in the drizzle, as she saw the high flush on the girl's cheeks. Minerva would have liked to have gone for a brisk walk.

"I have to say it is lovely to see you looking so well," she added, forgetting that this was usually a cue for people to ask after her health. "I know we really didn't get a chance to catch up last week, but I'm sure we've got plenty of time to do that another day."

"Tea, dear?" she asked. "I've got some nice slices here as well that young Victoria Frobisher made. They are quite delicious." She offered the plate to Hermione as she flicked her wand. The teapot began to pour two cups before one made its way over to Hermione.

"So you should know better than to pique my curiosity like that. What is it that you wanted to talk about? I'm rather intrigued?"

"Thank you, Professor." Hermione entered the house and looked around cautiously. She focused her attention on McGonagall even as she gripped her wand and silently cast several charms to ensure that they were alone and their discussion would be private. Content that all was well, she loosened her grip on her wand and removed her hand from the pocket of her coat.

"You look well, too," she said after a careful study of McGonagall. Sure, she was older and in the wheelchair, but she was alive and had her mind, which, really, was what mattered most.

"Tea would be lovely, thank you." She took the teacup and listened, continuing her silent observation. She hid a smile behind the rim when McGonagall got straight to the point.

"Should I? I would have expected you to be rather fond of having your curiosity piqued, Professor. After all, how dull would life be if one was never intrigued?"

She sat down and took a sip of her tea before she asked, "How would you feel about writing a book on Transfiguration?"

Minerva had noted Hermione's silent spell work as she came in through the door. Very subtle yet very powerful, she thought. There was still an air of subtle danger around the girl as she seemed far too fond of a tight grip on her wand. Minerva recognised such a stance when someone stood like that with their hand in their pocket. Alastor had shown her as much. That was understandable, of course. It would be a long time before Minerva felt the need to sleep without her wand under her pillow ( ... )

Minerva saw the look that Hermione gave the romance books that Padma had picked up. She kept a straight fact as she quietly banished the contents of the bag to the kitchen bench ( ... )

"I'm glad that some older students wish to sit OWLs," she said. "Education is very important for a number of reasons, of course, but not many seem to see it that way ( ... )

"I can't believe how rapidly things are changing, Hermione! Why just three weeks ago we just got your owl with the good news. Now it seems that everyone's arriving. I do believe this town will thrive ( ... )

Hermione listened and nodded. "I can imagine how difficult it must be," she said simply. "However, I suppose it's worth the trade for being alive, isn't it? I think they've underestimated your tenacity and strength, of course, but perhaps in moderation isn't too extreme." She gave McGonagall a knowing look. "As long as you keep your walking to a minimum and don't overdo it, you should be fine ( ... )
