Always Attract (Chapter 96)

Jun 10, 2012 12:18

‘Rock-a-bye baby, on the treetops,

When the wind blooows, the cradle will rock’

“Aiieeeechhhhkk”

“That’s right Prew.”

‘When the bough breaks, the cradle will fall,

And down will come baaaaaaaby, cradle and all.’

“Oh, spit bubble.”

“Sshppepe”

“I know,” Luke nodded in understanding. “’s gross.” Luke stood up from the rocking chair, Prewitt cradled in his arms and reached for the towel on the changing station behind him. He wiped the spit from Prewitt’s mouth and cooed when the baby gurgled again. “Okay Prew. Time for bed now. Think you can sleep for me?”

Prewitt stared up at him with wide, blue eyes as Luke gently placed him into the crib, affectionately rubbing his thumb over the fine baby hair that seemed to be sticking out along the side. Luke knew he shouldn’t be getting attached, but he couldn’t help the affection that bloomed within his chest each time he looked at the boy.

It was a week ago when they brought Prewitt home from the hospital. Going there with Reid and signing the papers to become Prewitt’s temporary guardians was oddly domestic, especially when Cindy, their favorite nurse, scooped up Prewitt and deposited him into Reid’s arms. Luke nearly came on the spot. Reid just looked at him, that smug grin plastered onto his face, knowing full well what the thought of having a family did to him. It was also for that reason that Luke had to keep reminding himself that this arrangement was in fact temporary.

Reid had been great this past week; amazing actually. When he wasn’t working, he would act as primary care taker with Prew that way Luke could either catch up on his online classes or do some work for the foundation. Sometimes it was just nice for him to get a nap somewhere in there. Even still, Luke always liked to rush through all of those things because curling up on the couch with Reid and Prewitt gathered in both of their arms was quickly becoming his new favorite thing.

Which is why his heart painfully clenched when Reid suggested it was time to start interviewing potential families.

“I just don’t see what the rush is. It’s December now and people are going to be getting ready for Christmas. Everyone is still recovering from Black Friday. You know they say that this is the most depressing time of year. Do we really want Prewitt going somewhere where people might…..you know….” Luke made a clicking noise with his tongue and swiped his finger across his throat making his point awfully clear.

“Luke!” Reid said astonished. “You really think that a family wanting to adopt is suddenly going to off themselves because what? They hit the DVD sales at Best Buy a little too hard and maxed out their credit card?”

“It could happen is all I’m saying. This is not the time of year for anyone to be making huge life decisions or changes. Plus! Think about this okay? The holidays are so busy. There’s always something going on. Prewitt needs attention. He needs this time to be all about him. If someone takes him now, what happens to his progress if he suddenly becomes second fiddle to everything else that’s currently going on? I’m telling you. We should wait until after the holidays.”

“Luke, I know what you’re doing.”

“I’m not doing anything,” he frowned.

“Yes you are. You’re trying to rationalize reasons why you shouldn’t start interviewing potential parents because you’re not ready to let him go yet.”

“That’s ridiculous. I’m trying to do what’s in his best interest.”

“Which is staying with you.”

“Yes.”

Reid stared at him pointedly and Luke huffed angrily. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

“Yes you did,” Reid said softly. He crossed the kitchen and affectionately cupped Luke’s cheek. “This was all part of the deal. You knew that this wasn’t a permanent situation. You can’t put it off. The longer it takes to happen the harder it’ll get.”

“You’re handling the situation awfully well,” Luke sniffed.

“You know me,” Reid sighed. “Emotion is not my friend. Come here.” He held his arms out for Luke and when the younger man stepped into his embrace, he wrapped them around him hoping that, that would give some sort of comfort. He could tell that Luke, being the man he is, was already in love with Prewitt, and as he looked across into the living room at the baby sleeping in the playpen, he might admit that he possibly was too.

And now! Some pictures for what I envision Prewitt to have looked like so far through this story:

At the Hospital. A little fighter!

Post Heart Operation and at home with Luke and Reid:

***A/N: So, the next chapter will most definitely be longer. I don't have a time frame for when it will be though. Between being back in school, working full time, and then also being sick, I'm pretty max'd time wise. I'm going to try to write just little bits at a time though just to keep this thing moving. With my health being so up and down, I never really know how things are going to go, but I will finish this story if it kills me. I know the update was super short, but this was all I could muster at the moment so I included the pictures to hopefully make up for it.
