escape from harsh reality

As she had expected, Helena had been spending a lot of time in the hospital this Christmas vacation.  She loved to see her mother, make no mistake about that, but it was getting to be too much.  When one is spending large portions of every day pretty much stranded in a hospital next to one's ill mother, yeah, it gets to you.

So, here she was, sitting in a waiting room while Morris was with her mother, trying to draw.  This place seemed to suck her creativity right out of her; she was having a really hard time coming up with anything.  Usually, she had any number of ideas rattling around in her head, all waiting to be drawn, but now, she had to resort to doodling.
