“DEAN!”

Sam scrambled down the stairs nearly tripping himself in his haste to get to the crumpled heap at the bottom of the stairs that was his brother.

“Somebody call an ambulance!” Sam caught the eye of a woman coming out of her room. She took a second to realize what had happened and her hand flew to her mouth in shock.

“Ok, oh my god, ok, I’ll call them now. Just hang on. I’ll be right back.”

“Oh my God, Dean.” Sam crouched down, wedging himself between the concrete side barrier of the stair case and Dean’s unconscious form when he finally made it to the bottom.

“Please, Dean, talk to me man.” Sam’s finger tips fluttered over Dean’s face, shoulders, arms and torso, not knowing where it was safe to touch without fear of hurting him further.

“Dean, come on man, I need you to talk to me, please. Let me know you’re ok.” Sam’s voice hitched tears flooded his eyes obscuring his vision. He hastily wiped at his face, taking a deep breath to steady him self, know that even if luck was on their side, this probably wasn’t going to turn out well.

Fortifying himself with another deep breath, Sam gently rested his hand on Dean’s side, laying his palm flat against his ribs. Five seconds ticked by desperately slow as Sam waited for the slow rise of Dean’s intake breath.

“Come on man, please, you can’t do this to me.”

Tears gathered and blurred his vision again as the time stretched on. Suddenly he felt a hitch in the chest under his palm, then a shallow rise. A breathy laugh escaped from Sam as he leaned down over him, resting his forehead on Dean’s shoulder.

“Thank god. Jesus man, you scared the crap out of me!”

“Mmmm..?” A low groan escaped from Dean’s parted lips. “..hat? Sam?”

“Hey, Dean, yeah, it’s me. Just take it easy, you took quite a tumble down there.” Sam braced Dean’s shoulders halting any movement, still worried about hidden injuries and potential ones from moving too soon.

“Don’t move, Dean, please stop trying to move.” Sam had to push down on his shoulders to stop the slight rocking that Dean had started.

“Ok, ok, I’ve got it…ugh…no moving. Settle petal, don’t get your panties in a twist.” Dean finally opened his eyes and smirked up at him.

“Seriously dude, you scared the crap out of me. You fell down the whole flight of stairs. What’s hurting you?”

“What, aside from my bruised ego, oh pretty much everything…yeah, umm, except…” Dean eyes flitted away from him, hinting that he’s was trying to cover something.

“Dean, what is it? What’s wrong?” Adrenalin flooded Sam’s already overwhelmed system, making him dizzy and nauseous.

“Uhh, nothing, but uh, it would probably be a good idea if you called for a unit. I think, uh, I think, I’m gonna need to have a visit to all those hot nurses.” Dean smirked up at him, trying to laugh it off but failing miserably when his face contorted into a grimace.

“Yeah, someone’s calling now. Dean, shit man, what’s going on, what’s wrong.” Sam moved further around so he could get his legs all the way around Dean prone form. He grabbed Dean’s leg to ease his own leg under it. He nearly dropped it again when he saw the unnatural bend in the leg at Dean’s shin. Sam looked directly at Dean expecting a scream of agony or at least another grimace, but Dean’s face showed minimal pain.

“Ah Dean?” Sam gently placed Dean’s leg back into it original position and turned to study his face as he asked his next question.

“Yeah?” Dean, moved his shoulder slightly, his face twitched and color drained a little more from his face. Sam could see sweat beginning to bead across his forehead.

“You can’t feel your legs can you?” Sam kept his face purposefully blank, suppressing the panic that was bubbling in his chest.

“Ahh…well…that, that would be a no. But not to worry, I’m sure it’s only temporary. Probably just bruising or something, messing up my nerves and shit.” Dean smiled at him again; his emerald eyes the only thing that gave away that he was less than calm.

Sam could see that sweat had started to trickle down Dean’s neck and pool in the divots of his collar bones. He was scared. Sam’s own panic started to claw up at this throat, constricting his throat so that his next words were strained and thready.

“Dean, it’s gonna be ok. They’ll fix you up and you’ll be just fine.”

“Yeah, dude, I know; nothing to worry about. You know me, I’m always fine.”

Sam ignored the slight hitch he could hear in Dean’s voice. The man had just fallen down a flight of stair of course he was a little stressed. It didn’t mean there was any reason to panic. Like Dean said he was always fine.

“Yeah man, you’ll be good as new in no time.” Sam smiled down at his brother and had to swallow hard at the lump constricting his throat.

The woman who had called for the ambulance ran over to them and crouched down beside Sam.

“Their coming. No more than a few minutes away now. I let the manger know too. He’s making sure they can get the ambulance right up to these stairs. How is he?” The woman’s hands were shaking as she reached out to touch Sam’s shoulder.

“Umm, he, uh, he’s definitely broken his leg. But he should be ok, well relatively speaking anyway.” Sam’s gaze skittered away from hers as he made the omission of Dean’s possible paralysis.

“Hey, I’m fine. A little banged up, but nothing a short visit to the ER can’t fix. Don’t you worry your pretty little head over it miss. The Sasquatch here is just a big worry wart.” Dean gave her the full force of his Winchester charm and smiled up at her.

Sam rolled his eyes as the young blond woman blushed and smiled back at him.

“Thank god, when I heard your brother scream, I thought, I, well never mind what I thought. You just concentrate on being ok.” The woman leaned in and stroked the hair off Dean’s sweaty brow.

Dean smiled wanly at the woman, glancing briefly at Sam, widening his eyes and mouthing his luck to him. Sam rolled his eyes and shook his head.

“De..” Sam was cut off from his derogatory remark to Dean.

“Oh, you’re getting cold. Let me go get a blanket for you.”

“Oh, would you, thank you so much, you’ve been a great help.” Sam jumped at the chance to get rid of her and smiled up at the woman, using his own charm to make her blush again.

“Just take it easy, I’ll be right back.” The woman ducked her head at them and scurried off back to her ground floor room.

Dean glared at Sam.

“Hey, quit trying to muscle in on my action.”

Sam managed a choked off a laugh, his throat so tight he could barely get out his next words.

“Dean, you are laying in a broken heap at the bottom of a staircase. I think the last thing that should be on your mind right now is if you are going to get laid in the near future.”

“Oh come on Sam, I’ll be fine. Nothing to worry about.”

“Dean you can’t feel you legs at all. This is more than a little bit serious. Stop pretending that it’s not.” Sam slammed his hand into the concrete support he was leaning against and tears once again blurred his vision.

“Hey, Sam, come on man, I’m sorry, I’m not trying to upset you. I know this is serious, but hey, this is me. I’m going to be fine. I’m always fine.”

Sam lowered his head and stared at Dean’s unmoving legs. The lump lodged in his throat threatened to choke him as a rush of emotion burst in his chest, making his breath hitch out. Just as he was about to make a complete fool of himself in public sirens could be heard wailing in the distance. Sam’s shoulders dropped a little and his breathing eased as he breathed a sigh of relief. Help was on its way. Like Dean said, he was going to be fine; nothing could keep his brother down for long. There is no way Dean could end up in a wheelchair, no way. Sam grabbed Dean’s hand and squeezed it tightly. Dean rolled his eyes at Sam.

“You’re such a girl, Sam.”

Sam couldn’t help but smile when he felt the return squeeze of his fingers.

“Whatever, Jerk.”

“Back at ya, Bitch.”
