My niece Emily had a baby boy last Monday, 6/7/10. He had trisomy 13, with massive problems in multiple systems, so on Friday, 6/11/10, they disconnected the machines and held him and loved him and let him go peacefully.

Emily shared a room with me growing up, and she's such a sweet person, and she's already gone through way too much crap in her life, and I feel so bad for her, and it is just so unfair.

I've got Boom De Ya Da as my alarm ring tone, and one morning I was listening to it, and it helped make sense of this whole thing: in order for there to be enough flexibility and randomness for there to be genetic mutations leading to all the incredible diversity of life on this planet, there has to be the chance that babies will be born with an extra chromosome that causes problems that are not compatible with life.
