Endtimes. Would that I had discovered you, like America.

There were things that Rethe only managed to discover about Aidan Clayce years later, after being on-yet-off, sorta-there-but-definitely-not-nothing for so long. They were small things, about as significant as footnotes in the long run, but they mattered to Rethe because they had to do with that one precious person who had opened his heart and drawn him out, connecting him for certain with the rest of the world. So he liked it whenever he cooked a dish and saw that particular quirk in Aidan’s lips that meant it was one of the Voidseeker’s few unnamed favorites, or when a song would play and he’d catch his partner humming along, maybe even singing when he remembered the lyrics and liked them enough to show it to the rest of the world. He cherished that time when they were stranded in some zombie-infested village in Europe and it suddenly occurred to Aidan to tell his latest (and only) partner all about the humorous circumstances revolving around the very first time he was stuck in some other zombie-infested village with Calintz; he could still point out, with complete confidence, the day on the calendar when Aidan had finally let his guard down and they had stayed up the whole night, talking about the woman Setsuna had been and just how much she had meant to him.

Rethe spoke to no one but Rilea of his feelings on the matter, and the woman convinced him that it was perfectly normal for someone to want to know everything about the person they loved the most. She could not, however, convince the boy that Aidan probably felt the same way.

There were things that Aidan only managed to discover about Rethe Kyriff years later, once he had decided that it was time to stop running and turn back to look, to really look, at the boy who had once told him that he was his world, the boy who had sworn, with a certainty too old for someone his age, to follow the Voidseeker wherever he may go. They were small things, unimportant details that had absolutely no effect on his performance as a Hunter, but they mattered to Aidan because people like them needed a little less maga-wrought, daemon-riddled excitement and a lot more normalcy in their lives on a regular basis. So he liked it whenever they went someplace new and Rethe’s eyes would light up and drink in so much at a single time that it must’ve made the boy a little dizzy, or whenever he’d be lucky enough to hear Rethe talk about himself. He cherished that time when the two of them had taken a whole day off just so that he could teach Rethe how to make several Mexican dishes; he could still point out, with complete confidence, the day on the calendar when he had finally managed to convince Rethe that it was okay to ask him for things, or to express what he truly felt.

Aidan had not intended to tell anyone about his feelings on the matter - he figured that it just wasn’t something people were supposed to talk about. Calintz figured it out though, and he had to suffer through his friend’s teasing before the Riskbreaker finally clapped him on the shoulder, grinned, and said “It’s great, though, to see that you’re finally happy.”
